Mac OS 10.4.2. Every time I close a window, Safari quits. I've checked for corrupted preferences, but it did not help. Any clue?

Hi Jacek

Did you trash the com.apple.Safari.plist preference file from here;

user>library>preferences

If you haven't done that, do it and try Safari.

Thanks for suggestion. Unfortunately, it did not help. I emptied cache, reset safari (quited also on this occasion), run a complete maintenance script from Cocktail, deleted favorite icons... Right now I've created a new user's account, and... Safari works as it should. So it must be something in my files. Probably, a hopeless situation.

This is what I would do;

1-Trash the Safari application

2-Trash the safari cache folder here - user>library>caches>safari

3-Trash the com.apple.safari.plist -again

4-Open user>library>safari - copy the Bookmarks.plist to the Desktop, then trash that Safari folder.

5-Use the Tiger disks to do a Custom install of just Safari.

Thanks for your help.
I followed exactly your advices, but the same symptoms persist.
After Safari quits, a message appears suggesting to send a report to Apple. I looked at the report and also in log crash, but these are far beyond my capacity.

Copy/Paste the Safari crash log here.

Bob, have you recieved my message with the Safari crash log? Here it seems that the message might be too big since I have not recieved confirmation that sending was OK.

I got the Log.

Restart while holding the Shift key down and try safari. Let me know if it crashes that way.

Bob,
The computer started in the safe boot mode. Unfortunately, Safari again quits, but this time without any information appearing afterwards

Trash everything I mentioned above again.

Then download and run the 10.4.2 Combo Update and see if that corrects the problem.

No, it did not help.
I presume that in this situation I should make a clean installation of the system if I want to get rid of this irritating phenomenon. Probably I will do that when I have a time.
In meantime, I really would like to thank you Bob very much for all your efforts to help me.
All the best,
Jacek

yes, if the Combo Update didn't fix the problem, a clean install is next. Sorry we couldn't fix this without doing that.

Dear Bob,
Via a stepwise elimination I finally found reason for Safari quiting. In my user's library/InputManager there was a folder SpeedDownload Enhancer which caused problems. I opened a file SpeedDownloadEnhancer.bundle in that folder and found in Contents/Resources a file SDSafariBundle.bundle, which I deleted. The symptoms disappeared, hopefully for ever.
Maybe this information can be helpful to other macosx.com users.
Best wishes,
Jacek
