Hi!

A couple of months ago, I started to experience some disturbing behaviour which seems to be triggered by Safari. I will hit a webpage and for some reason, Safari slows to a crawl. Trouble is, it takes the whole system with it, turning everything to sludge. I can switch between apps by clicking on them, but otherwise, every action takes ages, every single click is delayed by maybe half a minute or more. Meanwhile, the spinning beach ball of death appears whenever Safari is frontmost.

Sometimes with great patience i can force quit Safari but usually that's not possible and I have to power down the whole thing. Ugh!

I really can't think of anything Safari-related that I changed which might cause this behavour. Has anyone else experienced anything similar?

The worst part is, I never know when it's going to strike. If I have a bunch of other things on the go, they're all toast. Almost makes me want to switch to Firefox... but I like Safari and never had any issues with it - until now.

Thanks!
Adam

Adam,

I sincerely know what you mean, as it has happened to me also. There are a couple of things you can do.

First, go to Home>Library>Caches. Locate and open the Safari folder and trash all the folders in there. Empty the trash (you can do the same with the Mail folder in there also).

Restart the computer. Sometimes that is all it takes to get things back in the groove.

Finally, get a third party disk utility. I used Disk Warrior, starting up with the Disk Warrior CD, and having it rebuild the directory. You can save the Disk Warrior report if you wish. When done, restart the computer. You should find it running smoother and quicker.

Thanks Cheryl! I've cleared the cache and will see if that helps. Also, funny you should mention it, I recently ordered/downloaded DiskWarrior due to some trouble with my external backup drive - it fixed it in a jiffy. Now I'm waiting for the startup CD to arrive in the mail and my plan then is indeed to do a directory rebuild. Hopefully that will knock the gremlins out of my system!
