Today, Monday, I downloaded updates to OSX for my Mac Mini which must have included updates to Safari, or else to the Display function in OSX. After reboot my screen resolution had been altered to 800x600 and my desktop aliases rearranged. I reset my screen display to 1024x768 (previou setting), opened Safari and find that all websites of a fixed width are now shown aligned to the left or to the right - even sites which I know to be aligned to the center (including Google). If I set my screen display to either of the 1280x resolutions those same sites are center aligned again, but miniscule in size on the screen

As I purchased the MacMini specifically for using the Safari browser to test for compatibility of websites with all browsers this has now rendered Safari virtually useless to me. This problem did not exist before the update. Are you aware of this problem? Is there a fix for it? Thanks - Rhea

Rhea,

You are not the only person with a problem since that security update. Here is a workaround:

1. downloaded Safari from Apple's website but don't install it.

2. Go to System/Library/Frameworks/WebkitFramework and dragged Apple Webkit Framework to the trash.

3. Now drag Safari to the trash and reinstalled it from the new download.

4. Repair permissions from Disk Utility (in Utilities)

Many thanks for the prompt reply. I understand it all up to the point where I drag Safari itself to the Trash Bin. Where is this file actually located? And, if you don't mind, what do I have to do to repair permissions?

Many Thanks - Rhea

Rhea,

I apologize as I should have explained in more detail.

Safari is the compass icon and it is in Applications

To repair permissions - Go to the Utility folder (in Applications) and click twice on Disk Utility. When that opens, click once on the second icon at the left. Now click on First Aid.

At the bottom of the window you will see at the far right Repair Drive & Verify Drive. This will be grayed out. Move to the left of those buttons and you will see Verify permissions and Repair Permissions. Just click once on the Repair Permissions button.

When done, you can quit Disk utility and give Safari a try.

Hi, I have now downloaded Safari. I have tried to find Apple Webkit Framework in System/Library/Frameworks/WebkitFramework/ but am completely unable to locate anything which is remotely called Apple Webkit Framework. All I find is a set of nested folders within folders, which I have spent ages trawling through, with no result. Can you please tell me where I can locate this item that has to be dragged to the Trash? Thanks - Rhea

Hi, In the system/library/frameworks/webkitframework folder there is a Terminal icon with the expanded description A:Webkit - is this the one you referred to yesterday as Apple Webkit Framework? Thanks - Rhea

Rhea,

I am sorry I may have confused you. That file is in:

system OS X folder --> Library -->Frameworks

And it is the folder Webkit.framework you want to trash.

Hi, I'm sorry, but I'm still not getting this. When I click on the Mac HD logo on the Desktop I get a list of folders, one of which is System (and inside this is a Library folder), but there is also a Libary folder at this level.

If I go from System to Library to Frameworks then there is a folder called WebKit.framework. Is this the one I have to drag to the Trash? Thanks - Rhea

Well, I have done all that and it is still the same. If I view center aligned websites using screen resolution 1280x then center aligned websites are correctly aligned. If I set the screen resolution to 1024 by 768 (which is the best resolution for this screen) then the same websites are aligned either to the right or left of the screen (no matter what the coding for the webpage contains). Prior to the latest download I had my screen resolution set to 1024x768 and Safari worked fine - now it doesn't. Do you have any other idea as to what may be causing this problem - it is definitely related to the download. Rhea

Rhea,

I was so sure that this would solve the problem. Since your machine was working properly previously, the only thing I can suggest is to re-install OS X, then install all the security updates - minus the 3/2005 security update.

On the OS X CD that came with your system, what does it exactly say. I want to make sure it can install 10.3.8 for you.

Thank you for your help Cheryl. You have done your best to assist with this. However, I am a web developer and bought the MacMini purely so that I could use the Safari browser for cross-browser compatibility testing. I really do not have the time to spend on reinstalling the operating system just in the hope that it may fix the problem. I will leave it as it is at the moment and see if a further 'update' cures the problem caused by the last one. If not then this MacMini will be going to E-Bay! Thanks again for all your help - Rhea

Rhea,

You can send me one of the files to check out on my machine. I will certainly help you with your project.

Do you have the OS X CD? it could be that you have to run Disk utility to repair the drive to get it back to working properly. You can not repair the drive or the files on the drive unless you boot up with a different drive. Starting with the OS CD will allow you to do this.

Insert the CD, go to the Apple Menu and select Restart and Immediately hold down the C key. Continue to hold down the C key until you see the Installer Screen. Now release the key but DO NOT click on the installer screen.

Instead go to the Installer menu and select Disk Utility. When that opens, click once on the second drive icon at the left, then click on the First Aid tab. At the bottom right is Verify Drive and Repair Drive. Click on Repair Drive. You need to watch the activity screen for Appears Okay. If that does not come up first, click on Repair Drive again. You may need to click on that button three times until you get Appears Okay.

When that is done, to the left of the Repair Disk is Repair permissions. click on that button.

When done, Quit Disk Utility and then restart the computer. Now give it a try.

Hi, Thank you for your advice which I have followed. The problem is still the same. I have run out of patience with this machine, and it will now be going up for sale on E-bay as 'damaged goods'. Thank you for trying to sort it out. Rhea

Rhea,

Don't give up yet. This is a new machine and it is covered under warranty. Call Apple and have them work with you on this.

And do not tell them you are testing a new web site. Just tell them that Safari is not showing web pages properly some to the left, some to the right, which you know is not correct as you have visited them before.

Thank you for your advice. I did phone the UK based Mac Support Telephone Line and the problem was diagnosed and corrected. Somehow the Safari Preferences file had become corrupted, and after this was dragged to the trash bin and the computer rebooted Safari began to behave normally. So - I don't have to send the MacMini to E-bay now! Many Thanks - Rhea
