hi, it is good to see that you could help users that i do for a lot of users before that i could answer. :-)
but for now i have a big one problem with safari on the web .
Every time i open it or go to the apple site by default or by URL command i only get the words no images , look likes when you makes pages on a site and forget to but back the sensitive case for the images appears.Apple don't miss that ...lol.
But it's not that because on one pages i have all the images is : http://www.mac.com/WebObjects/Welcome.woa.
Very cool to see the images. :-)
It is been happens for 4 months now , btw all other site ( almost ) are OK ....weird !!!!!
someone told me that i could use AppleJack stuff to correct the king of corrupted caches. but i could not d/l Apple Jack from version-trackers or else site , when i try it start and then i have a blank page ...!
i did all the stuff like the preffs. by default and even but back the system 10.3 and then at that time i makes a test and it was ok now COOL . But 2 days after it begin to do it again like : some images missed not all , but day after day it goes likes before.
so i updates to 10.3.9. with all security updates to and nothing appends .
I correct the permissions and all with utility disk boot .
Can you help me ?
Thank, from Gerry.

Gerry,
While it is strange that you have a problem with only one web site, I do have a solution. You may want to print this so you have the instructions handy.

downloaded Safari from Apple's website but don't install it.
http://www.apple.com/safari/download/

2. Go to System/Library/Frameworks/WebkitFramework and drag Apple Webkit Framework to the trash. (it is the folder Webkit.framework you want to trash. )

3. Now drag Safari to the trash(from applications folder) and reinstalled it from the new download.

4. Repair permissions from Disk Utility (in Utilities)

You should be able to get to that web site now.

Did you install the Java update?

P.S. i have Java newer one " Java web start 2.1.0 " !
I check and see that : the folder-
WebKit.framework
Resources/alias
Frameworks/alias
WebKit/alias
Versions/not alias
Headers/alias
Is that the files ? to put to the trash ?
wait for your answer :-)

Gerry,

Trash the WebKit alias and then open the Versions trash Current alias.

Then open A and trash WebKit.

I apologize - I should have double checked the location of those files before I typed them.

Gerry,

If the other files disappear, that is okay. Right now you want to install a fresh copy of Safari. Do not worry about putting the files back.

hi Cheryl,
I try what you tell me and nothing happends even it is bad because now even safari does not open and IE to !
so i had to reinstall the system 10.3 clean one because i made another mistake ...cause by the time i was install it 10.3 i see that a did not personnalise the install ...soo i quick in the bigenning and i had a warning that the old system will not be able to restart so ? i did say ok
I did the install clean and now i hav to reinstall all the info about every thing the system didn't take care of ! :-/ you know what it is ...

Gerry,

The clean reinstall will work. Now all you need - besides installing your porgrams, is to install the security updates and the Combo 10.3.9.

Here are the security updates:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=61798

Here is the 10.3.9 combo update:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...pdate1039.html

I am surprised that the trick did not work. You should be surfing smoothly now, though.

Gerry,

That is good news!
As for those folders, you can trash everything EXCEPT
Mail
iTunes
iMovie

Those folders may have files that you may want such as music, movies and your Mail.

I am assuming that you have installed (or reinstalled) all your programs/applications.

Gerry,

I must have been asleep at the wheel. - You need some of the packages in Receipts. Compare the two folders (new and previous) and drag over just the ones that are not in the new - like iTunes, Keynote, Quicktime, iPhoto.

Preferences (from Home folder) is another folder you should compare. Those hold your registration numbers of the programs you installed.

The rest you can drag to the trash.

Gerry,

Your address book data should be in Home>Library>Application support>AddressBook.

It probably is time to do a disk repair. After several installations some files do need a slight correction. The easiest way:

1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.

The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."

Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:

***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****

Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.

When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.",
6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.

Let me know if this helps.

But still the adress book you told me where it is ...soo do i drag it( all the file ) in the system library or somewhere else ..?
And now PS is working but when i double click on a icon of image it do not appears in PS ...i hav to do : Open/file/choose to hav it on the screen ... what could i do ...reinstall PS or ?
And still the FIND action do not do the job right ...first time i see that ..
on the 10.3. we do not need to indexed ...!
Thank for your support :-)
Cheryl - Aug 1, 2005 - 6:40 pm

Gerry,

First, your address book data should be in your Home folder>Library folder>application support folder> Address book folder. Not in the system library. Your Home folder Library.

Some times files do not open with the program you want. All you need to do is click once on the image file. Go to the File Menu and select Get Info.
There is a section that says Open With. There should be a pull down menu. Select PS. If it is not in the list, then select Other. A new window will open. Just go to Applications and select PS.
Now in that Get Info window click on the button that says Change All.

Now all your images will open with PS.

The Find action: Exactly what do you mean that it does not do the job right? Give it a test. Select Find and type in Safari. Does it show you where Safari is? If you are doing a search for a word that is within a document, you will get strange results.

for the address book ...i go where you says and this is what i have.:
Address Book.data.previous
Address Book.data.before save
Address Book.data
ABPerson.skIndex.
and nothing in the application went i open it !
it alright if you have no other issue.
For the .jpg files i did what you says but it is already that option on the info file. i will reinstall PS ...
Thank Cheryl.

Gerry,

Have you repaired permissions using Disk Utility?

In the Utilities folder - open Disk Utility.
When that opens, click once on the second hard drive icon in the side bar at the left.
Now click on the First Aid tab, then Repair Permissions. Repair Disk will be grayed out.

When done, quit Disk Utility and give the computer a test run.

Thank for the tip but ...nyet even a lot of permissions have been corrected with disk utility.. nothing is there in adress book.
I'm suprised that i could repair permissions in the system disk without boot the cd install for the utility soft...!
Cheryl - Aug 1, 2005 - 9:39 pm
image
image
Gerry,

You can use Disk Utility that is in the Utility folder to work on other drives and to repair permissions on your hard drive. You can not use it to repair the drive that is the start up drive.

Does Safari have all your bookmarks? Does Mail have all your emails?
Do you have a backup of the AddressBook files? Your data should be there, and I am not sure where it disappeared to. Double check your Trash.

I wish I was in front of your computer. I would then be able to find those files for you. And sometimes you need to walk away from the computer for a while. When you come back to it, you usually have success in finding what you want.

Hi Cheryl,

....: Does Safari have all your BOOKMARKS? ( no ).
Does Mail have all your emails? ( Yes)
Do you have a backup of the AddressBook files?( NO ) Your data should be there ( where ?), and I am not sure where it disappeared to. Double check your Trash. ( the trash is almost always empty )
I know a bit of the way it goes but i'm not a programmer in system like the words to write to make somes kind of actions in single user mode . i know the fsck -fy and the Pram and ealse but not all of them .. :-/ )
it was always helpful to talk to you Cheryl , thank so much.
See you ... in french we says... @+
