Ok,
download Cocktail from here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/26516
then go to Pilot and leave it run... it may take a while, but it will do some maintenance to your system...
try to see if that helps, otherwise we can try something else...
--------
Stefano
Thanks for choosing macosx.com
jack west - Sep 12, 2005 - 10:58 am
i did pilot also i already purchased a maintance program a while back that does all that stuff.i'm still in the same boat. thanks for trying...got any more ideas?
Tetano - Sep 12, 2005 - 11:01 am
I think it's something related to some preference file, so go to the terminal and type:
sudo plutil -s ~/Library/Preferences/*
then press enter and enter your administrator password...
Have you already reseted safari from the Safari menu?
--------
Stefano
Thanks for choosing macosx.com
jack west - Sep 12, 2005 - 11:33 am
1st. time in terminal for me.i got a small screen saying "terminal-bash-80x24" so i pasted your instructed sentence the clicked it off. nothing happened that i know of.did i miss something? thanks
Tetano - Sep 12, 2005 - 11:42 am
sorry, I've seen I pasted an incomplete command... this is the correct one
sudo plutil ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
once you've pasted it, you should press enter, you will be asked to insert your administrator password. You won't see what you're typing, it's a security feature of the Unix system underlying OS X... press again enter, then copy and paste here what you obtain from the terminal.
--------
Stefano
Thanks for choosing macosx.com
jack west - Sep 12, 2005 - 12:03 pm
i followed your instructions until the last sentence: copy&paste here etc. ? its a large list w/a slider must be a few thousand letters. can't copy part of it then move slider down to get the rest of it. sorry but this is new territory 4 me
Tetano - Sep 12, 2005 - 12:05 pm
No problem, just press [apple]+[a] (the brackets mean key... doing this you will select all the text in the window) then copy and paste...

Stefano
Thanks for choosing macosx.com

i can't see anything different than when we started. for instance: i type in dodgers and go to that website. then to yahoo then quit safari. then relaunch and type in dodgers all over again. it use to give me choices as soon as i typed the d in dodgers. this was really useful when i go to photoshopelementsuser.com or something like that as i "hunt & peck". thanks for all the effort so far. at least you taught me a new select all command!
Tetano - Sep 13, 2005 - 6:36 am
But, if you don't quit the application, does Safari remember the addresses you've typed in?

jack west - Sep 13, 2005 - 9:32 am
no it doesn't. no matter what i do...safari no longer remembers anything i type.
Tetano - Sep 13, 2005 - 9:42 am
It seems like there could be something wrong with the cache of Safari... go to the folder Home/Library/Caches, then click once on the folder Safari, and press [apple]+[i], and tell me what is written in the drop down menu in the Ownership and Permission panel in the window that pops up... sorry if this problem is taking so much time, but this behaviour is quite strange...
You can also try a Repair permission maintenance... Go to Application, Utilities, launch Disk Utility, then highlight the volume Macintosh HD in the left part of the window, and in First Aid click on repair permissions. This operation should be performed once a month, and in particular if you perform software updates and installation.

ok it reads like this: you can READ & WRITE then details owner jack [me] grayed out. access:READ & WRITE group:JACK grayed out access:NO ACCESS others:NO ACCESS then the last circled thing says- apply to enclosed items. also i do repair permissions a lot.

i went to home-library-safari & clicked once & pressed i & got this: you can READ AND WRITE...details...owner jack....access READ AND WRITE...group jack...access READ ONLY....others READ ONLY...then last the apply to enclosed items button

Maybe some of them is causing problem... if you go to help, you will find an installed plugin voice. click on it, and post here the plugins that are installed... I'll check them one by one...

Do you remember what you specifically download from versiontracker that can modify some Safari settings? I've seen a preference file regarding Ape Manager, which applet is installed within this plugin? because I've read about many problem caused by this manager, but I need some specific information...

i'm not sure of all that i downloaded or when as i was dumb enough to figure that "what could it hurt" to try out everything? i'm not sure what "ape manager" is. also "applet" is unclear to me. so i don't koow what i do here. i do remember installing "safari enhancer" and yesterday found it in spotlite & trashed it. not sure if it's really gone or not. i was trying to rid all safari add ons i downloaded to try to isolate this problem but my lack of knowledge is really stopping me here. sorry i can't help you to help me!
Tetano - Sep 14, 2005 - 4:13 pm
APE manager is an application that allows you to install some plugins, you can find it in system preference, it creates a panel with a monkey... also, try to download again the update, from here:
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/17743
and after the update repair permissions... amybe just some file is corrupted...

went to system prefs. and found no ape manager- all i saw was regular syst. pref. stuff thats always there. i think i'm on the wrong track on that. i downloaded safari update again[ did that on 8-29] and then repaired permissions but nothing has changed and safari can't remember anything.
