I am confused about how Safari uses plug-ins, and am not having any luck finding such information on Apple's website. (Using OS X 10.2.8, Safari 1.2)
I just visited a site that has a link to download/play an .rm file (which belive is a RealMedia file that should be played with RealPlayer plug-in (which is installed according to the Installed Plug-ins list). But for some reason, GraphicConverter keeps trying to open the file and gives me an error. I did a search for GraphicConverter on my computer and threw ANYTHING relating to that away, but when I clicked the link again, there was GraphicConverter, trying to open the file with the same results! How do I tell Safari to open that file with RealPlayer? The file (downloaded) will play when opened IN RealPlayer, just not thru Safari,
Thank you in advance.

Select the downloaded file in the Finder and choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Open With section, choose RealPlayer from the menu. Then click Change All, and confirm the action in the dialog.
There's no need to throw away GraphicConverter; it's a fine application for its own purposes.
Let me know how that goes.

Well, that will allow that particular file to open with RealPlayer, but how do I have other .rm files from the internet open with RealPlayer (as opposed to GraphicConverter)?
I agree, t's a great program for CONVERTING files, but RealPlayer is what I want to use to open .rm files (or Quicktime for that matter, but I didn't think QT supported that type of file).
Thanx again.

Did you remember, Tara, to click the Change All button?

Yeah, the icon changes to a RealPlayer doc, but no app actually opens (the file DOES download, however). Is there some other setting that I'm forgettting?

The only purpose of "Change All" for "Open With" is that: it changes the application associated with every file of the same extension to the one you've just selected. Afterward, every such file will open with that application.
I guess you're saying, though, that RealPlayer doesn't open automatically when you download files that the Finder now associates with it. In Safari, do you have "Open safe files after downloading" checked? Have you tried restarting Safari? Or perhaps you need to log out and log in again.
If none of these steps work for you, we can talk about another option.

HI Ben,
Yeah, RealPlayer doesn't open automatically, in fact, nothing opens. Here's what happens: I click on a link on a website, the Download Manager opens and it downloads a file to my "downloads folder". The file appears to be a RealPlayer doc, but nothing actually launches the file.
I do have "Open safe files after downloading" checked, and have restarted Safari. In fact, the computer has been shut down and re-started. I log in automatically, so I never really have to log out. I know I'm missing something, I'm just don't know what it is! Any other suggestions? Oh, when I list my Installed plug-ins, it shows that the RealPlayer Plug-In is installed for files with rm extensions. Can I change this somehow?
Thanx again

How about this: Have you double-clicked on one of those .rm files in your downloads folder?, thereby opening it in RealPlayer, the newly default application. If not, try doing so. Then, restart Safari for good measure and try downloading a file again.

Ya know...I just re-downloaded & installed the RealPlayer plug-in, shut everything down, opened the file (which opened RealPlayer) and then tried to open the file through Safari, and IT WORKED!!! I'm not sure what was wrong with my old RealPlayer plug-in, but it's working now.
Thank you so much for your time and advice...this website ROCKS (and so do you!!!

You're welcome, Tara. I'm glad you found a solution that worked. (I wonder if you simply had an older version of RealPlayer, or if the system got confused after some other update.)
Every session is a learning experience on both ends. Thanks for it!
