Using Leopard 10.5.2 on a MacBook. I cannot backup up my address book. I open Address book, highlight all the entries then go to File, Export and then ‘Address Book Archive‘ . I get a file called

But when I try and import
back into Address Book it wipes the latter clean of all entries. Closing address book and opening it again restores all the old entries

I do not understand this.

If you back up your Address Book, you have a full backup. (the file that is created ends in .abbu, as you can see, and means Address Book Back Up), so restoring from that file would do just that - a restore (replacing what is already there)
How is that different than what you were expecting?

Do you want to ADD, or merge that address book listing to another computer? OR, did you just want to export or import vCards?

There's a lot of information about the various options in the help files for your Address Book.

note - you already have a backup of your Address book if you are utilizing your Time Machine software for backing up your Mac.
