I am taking class online and as a part of this class the teacher sends me short “movies” that are viewed on windows media player directly from a website. I am supposed to save these and then burn them onto a cd or DVD. I am at a very low level of technical understanding. Here is my problems-

- I don’t know why the computer uses windows media player to open these movies and won’t let me use QuickTime or real player.
- This is streaming video from a website – I don’t know how to save them or burn them. I dragged the thing you click on to my desktop. It now appears as a piece of paper with a @ on it with the letters HTTP under the @. I tried to drag that onto both idvd and itunes – but it seems to be incompatible with both. How do I put these movies onto a CD for later use?

Thanks

Glenn

Your Videos open in Windows Media because they will be in the Windows Media Player format. The only other pleyer for Mac that I know of is VLC Media Player. You could try downloading this but I'm not sure it will play streaming content or save it. I know you can save alot of QuickTime Streaming content but I don't think Microsoft has put such a feature into either there Windows or Mac version of Windows Medai Player.

I downloaded VLC and do nt understand how to open it using this. I do not undersand why RealPlayer doesn't work because the teacher specifically said for mac users to open using RealPlayer. All I want to do is save this streaming video and burn it to a DVD.

Hello

I am personally do not know much about Real Player but you may need to open it and change some of the prefrences for streaming content.
Your other option may be that there are some plugins for Quick Time so you can play Windows Media content in Quick Time. However i'm not sure if this would play streaming content.

Anyhow have a look in the Real Player prefrences, and possibly ask the teacher how to get it into Real Player. If no luck let me know and i'll do some research for you.

Thank you for the response. I got the information recorded using a PC so it is no longer urgent, I would like to know how to do this on my computwer in the future though. I looked under prefrences in real player and streaming video was checked. I also noticed that ther is not an option to record. I want to learn how to watch streaming video, save it, and burn it to a DVD on my computer using whatever software would do that. On the PC it was Wndows media player, I guess a different version than the one for mac because that one does not have a save option either. It's not urgent but if you happen to know a way to do this I'd love to learn how.

Thank you,

Glenn

I personally think the only way that you may be able to do this is to get a Windows Media Plugin for Quicktime.
Personally all web video content should be steamed in quicktime format as there are reliable players for both Mac and Windows.

However i'll have a look later on tonight if there is any known way to do what you want.

Thank's. Could this be the reason that the movies won't play on quicktime?

Yes Quicktime will NOT play any Windows Media files unless a plugin is obtained.

Checkout: http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv.htm
and download the free version and see if you can get it to play streaming. If not I don't know what will (Well probably one of the paying ones will).
