I work in Photoshop 7 & CS on files stored in our Mac OS X server, accross the network. Our server is set up as the Owner and a Group of 4 Macs called "Graphics" is set up with Read & Write privileges.
I am having trouble saving any changes to any file that was created or last modified on a Mac other than my own. The ownership & permission area of the Get Info on the server for that particular file will change to that of whomever worked on it last, even though it was originally set as Owner: Server, Group: Graphics. Every time I work on a file, for instance, it will change it to Owner: Josie, Group: Staff.
Subsequently, if someone other than myself modifies the file that I last worked on, they get the following message "could not save because the file is locked."
This is occurring with modified images within Photoshop CS as well as updated files within Quark 6.5.
We did not have this problem working in the same fashion on OS 9.3 in conjunction with the Mac OS X server. This has been occurring since we started working in OS X in the Graphics Group in conjunction with the Mac OS X server.
My question is, is there a way to keep our individual Macs from affecting the Ownership & Permissions set up on our Server each time we alter a file on our end?
I am very confused and haven't been able to find this topic other than the standard suggestion of "get info" and changing the permissions on the server each time this occurs, which is overwhelming and impractical since we have thousands of files.
Any ideas out there? Better yet, any solutions?
Help!
Josie
Hi there Josie, thanks for choosing macosx.com
This is little speculative I'm afraid as this is not my primary area of expertise, but worth a try. On non-boot volumes (and i believe non-boot partitions) there is a checkbox option in the Get Info panel called "ignore permissions on this volume". This might help your problem, though if you are storing the documents on the main server HD unpartintioned, the oprion wopn't be available.
Alternatively, there is a program called SharePoints which allows more in depth management of user and group management of shared directories and volumes. You can see it at
http://www.hornware.com/sharepoints/ , plus its regularly recommended as a fix for such problems on the macosx.com general forums (i searched there for some in depth info, but its all just recommendations I'm afraid)..
I hope this helps with your problem. If not, make sure you reply, even to just to say the problem persists, in order to reopen the question for other techs here to have a crack at.
Regards,
Owen
Hi Owen.
Thanks for responding. I did go check the Get Info box, but there is no such option available (why couldn't it have been that easy?) so I'm still searching for a fix. I will look into the sharepoints software suggestion and see if I can find something there.
Once again, thanks.
Josie
