Description:
We have installed Adobe PhotoShop 4.0 and Umax VistaScan on one 6500 Power Mac and Microtek and Color-It on another. Word Processing program is Microsoft Works 4.0 and Writing Center. I really wanted to be able to scan forms and other text into a program where it could be revised etc. What do I need to do? And I have memory related problems whenever I try to open up the word processing program at the same time.

Dear Carol,

You need an OCR (optical character recognition) software package such as OmniPage Pro, which is the best currently available, although Xerox TextBridge is pretty good and available at less than half the price ($49 as compared to $129) This software will work with both scanners and install an additional scanner plug-in. You can export the text that you scan to various word processing formats, though for Writing Center you may need to translate to a generic text format such as RTF (once you work with the software you will see what I am talking about). Unfortunately, scanners don't just do OCR without some kind of software which converts the image into editable characters.

Hope that helps. Feel free to e-mail me back with any further questions.

Sincerely,

Wayne Jones
