TICKET ARCHIVE -> Scanner Driver Problem In Panther

Powerbook G4 with Panther
Canon Pixma MP780 multi-function unit (copy, scan, fax, print)- new purchase.

Everything works except scanning. The scanning software from Canon cannot find the scan driver (twain - presumably). Image Capture works but is limited - can't save to file which is the whole point of scanning a doc or pic.

I'm posting on Canon website also but just wondered if anyone with a powerbook had come across this one before.

Thanks

Hello Karen,

One suggestion is to download a fresh driver from Canon for your all-in-one unit.

Also, if you have not already done so go to your: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences
Locate the: com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist
Drag the file to the Trash, then empty the Trash.

Try these suggestions and if this doesn't do the trick, please post back.

Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn,

Thanks for your reply to my post. I have already downloaded the driver file from the canon website but this made no difference to the problem.

I don't have a file called:
com.apple.print.PrintingPrefs.plist

There is however a folder called Canon>BJPrinter>DeviceInfo and a file called MP780.plist in this - the information this contains is:
.CDRInfo 0

There is also a folder called scangear MP780 (this is the scanning software from Canon), this folder contains lots of .DAT files but no plist files.

I am a new mac user (since Feb 05) but can be pretty technical when required.
Thanks for your help.

Hello Karen :-)

I'm sorry about the driver situation. One thing I do know.. and that's why they call them drivers. They drive you crazy and you aren't alone in this ;-)

Karen, you have a PBook running Panther... are you up to date on your software downloads? Also, you mentioned the twain driver for the scanner. Which application do you scan to? Image Capture or another application? A Twain driver imports a scan from whichever application you've chosen in your preferences. I used to use a Twain driver in Fireworks for graphic design and I remember having a time getting it installed correclty.

And you mentioned that you had posted at Canon... have you received any replies there? Also, you might try posting at the www.apple.com/support (discussions) site. Lots of good support people there with experience.

Let me know how it goes...
Carolyn :-)

Hi Carolyn,

Update for you as I just got everything to work.

The applications that were causing problems were Canon software MP Navigator and Omnipage_SE_Direct_OCR by scansoft which was bundled with the install CD.

I found a solution on the Scansoft website. Someone had the same problem and the suggestion was to get the Twain.sourcemanager.shlb from the twain working group website (sorry can't remember the url but it comes up in a search engine) and copy this into the Components folder for the Omnipage application. Applications>Omnipage SE>Components.

The Omnipage_SE_Direct_OCR software still didn't work but I noticed there was another application called Omnipage SE. I tried this and this worked - it appears to be exactly the same as the Omnipage_SE_Direct_OCR so I'm not sure why one should work and the other one doesn't but I'm not losing sleep over that one.

I also decided to copy the same .shlb file into the Scangear folder as scangear is the twain driver application that MP Navigator uses. MP Navigator worked as did scanning using the scangear application directly.

I hope this information is useful for other users who may have the same problem.

thanks for your help, Karen
