Description:
I have a new iMac, after happy years using a PM7500, but I also have a Umax1220u scanner with software like Vistascan and PResto stage manager and Adobe Photodeluxe, and almost no information about any of it after the basic help screens. I know all about Photodeluxe, have figured out how to open Vistascan inside the Adobe PhotoDeluxe, have figured out that OmniPage Light is OCR software that I know nothing about, but what is Presto? And how can I learn about scanning in detail? Any books on the subject? I am truly over my head here and would like someone to point to a route I can take to learn about this area of computing. I see that UMax is not about to make my journey easy. Thanks for your advice.

Sydney,

Hello and welcome to No Wonder!, your online source for computer technical support via e-mail in 24 to 48 hours.

Regarding your question about scanning with the Umax 1220u... Presto is an image management application- it allows you to organize the images and documents that you scan. It also has rudimentary image editing and annotating features. I believe that the documentation for the software is on the CD that Umax provides with the 1220u. It is probably in Adobe PDF (Acrobat) format- this isn't all that unusual, many applications no longer come with paper documentation. Software developers do this to cut costs.

When you installed your scanner and the software accompanying it, it should have been preconfigured to recognize the scanner. If you use Adobe Photoshop or other image editing/manipulation software, you can simply drag the VistaScan plug-ins (found in the Plug-ins folder inside the Vistascan software folder) to the appropriate Plug-ins folder on the application you decide to use.

There are books on scanning and image manipulation- one excellent book is called, "The Color Mac- Production Techniques, 2nd Edition" by Miller and Zaucha published by Hayden Books. It is a few years old, but has much information Beginners through Advanced on image acquisition and manipulation. There are many other books on the subject- check the book section at your local Barnes & Nobles or Borders. Or perhaps checkout Amazon.com under their computers section.
Also... don't be afraid to play with the scanner... dig out a few photos and scan them!
I hope that I have given you some answers to your questions, should you have any further questions, please contact me at:
