I am a former PC user and I am totally new to Macs. I have a Mac os x.I downloaded software for my scanner from the samsung site.(scx-4200). Their icon appeared on my desk top and when I clicked on it I get a message"there is no default application specified to open document." When I attempted different applications nothing was successful. Please help.

Larry,
In order to help you, I do need a bit more information.
What is the full name of that file on your desktop including the letters after the dot?
Did you download both software downloads for the scanner? There are two listed - one is Scan Driver, the other (from what I can gather) is the printer driver.
Once I get your answers, I will be able to help troubleshoot.

Larry,
That scanner file will not work on your iMac as it is a windows executable file.
What you need is to delete that file and download the SCX-4200 Scan Driver for Mac OS 10.3 - 10.4 (ver.1.00.97) at this web site:
http://www.samsung.com/support/produ...e=DR&language=
Once you have that downloaded, you should be able to install and use the scanner.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Again thanks
I did what you recomended and downloaded the mac compatable file. The icon that appears on my desk top is the installation file ScanTru..aller.dmg. How do I open the program so that I can use the scanner?

Larry,
Now you have the right file for your Mac.
Just click twice on the .dmg file and it will expand. What will now appear is an icon that looks like a white hard drive.
Click twice on that to open it.
You should now see an installer icon or an open box icon. In either case, click twice on that. This will start up the installer.
Just follow the prompts and you should be all set.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi Cheryl
Thank you for being so patient with me.
I was able to install the program as I got the message "installation was successful"; however the icon that appears on the desktop is the installation one and not the scanner program. How do I access it so that I can utilize the scanner?

Larry,
Those files on your desktop can now be dragged to the trash. The actual program should be in your Applications folder.
Just go to the Go menu and select Applications. Look for ScanTrue and just click twice on it to start it up.
You should be all set.

Alas its not there. There is a image capture icon that doesn't seem to be what I need. The Samsung manual indicates that there should be an icon "ScanThru 4". Which I can not locate. Any advice?

Larry,
We have hit a brick wall. What was installed was the twain driver to allow scanning, but I could not find the ScanThru 4 software on Samsung's web site. When I did a search on their site, all I got was only supported with Windows.
The printer came with a CD. Check the CD to see if there is ScanThru4 on the CD for Mac.
If not, the next step is to use a third party software. Samsung's web site suggests PhotoShop or PhotoDeluxe. I think Graphic Converter can also do the job.
There are some third party scanner softwares, but they do not list the Samsung as a supported machine.
Let me know if you need further assistance.

Hi Cheryl
Sorry for the delay in responding to you.
I was able to reach Samsung's Tech Support, they agreed with you that their scanner software does not support the Mac. This drives me crazy as their description of the printer clearly indicates that it does. My choices seem to be scanner software or a new inexpensive scanner. I am considering a Canon Lide 60 or 70 Flatbed. The software option seems to VueScan. As I don't want to buy an expensive software program i.e.. PhotoShop do you have any recommendations? Again I thank you for your knowledge, advice and rapid response.

Larry,
Graphic Converter can use a Twain plugin for scanners. You might want to try it with the Samsung. The software you installed was a Twain file.

It also does everything that PhotoShop does for only a shareware fee. I use it for my digital camera photos.

Hi Cheryl
I JUST SPOKE TO CANON SALES;THEY ARE COMING OUT NEXT MONTH WITH A NEW FLATBED SCANNER THE LIDE70 WHICH SUPERSEDES THE LIDE 60 FOR ABOUT $70. THEY TOLD ME IT COMES WITH OMNIPAGE SCANSOFT AND CANOSCAN TOOL BOX SOFTWARE THAT'S MAC COMPATIBLE. I THINK THE GRAPHIC CONVERTER SOFTWARE MAY TOO SOPHISTICATED FOR ME.

Larry,
As long as you can wait the month for the new Canon, go for it. Graphic Converter does have a lot of options to tweak your pictures. I have been using it for a long time and have just adjusted to each new version. Right now, it does look overwhelming.
