In the Finder (whether or not you want to eventually take your screenshot there) - choose Help from the Help menu. Click the Topics button at the top; select "Tips and Features" from the list "1." and "How do I... take a "snapshot" of the screen" from the "2." list (you'll have to scroll down). Select the option you want and follow the instructions.

Whichever option you pick you'll have a file called "Picture 1" at the root level of your startup disk. Then you can use a program such as GraphicConverter to convert the PICT format screenshot to GIF or another format suitable for placing on a web site. Just open the graphic, do a Save As and pick the format you want. You may need to change it to 256 colors first for GIF if your display is showing Thousands or Millions of colors.
