Description:
I'm trying to install OS 8.5 on my Powerbook by connecting it with my Mac 6500 and using its CD drive. I've followed the manual but can't get SCSI icon to appear on the powerbook desktop.
Any suggestions on how to get OS 8.5 installed on Powerbook 5300? Thanks!

Hi Jeff,

Hopefully I can help. I recently did this, but I don't know if you have all the tools I have.

#1 - does your 5300 have ethernet? If it does, all you need is an Ethernet cross over cable. Then perform the install via the Ethernet. Tha's what I did when I upgraded my 5300 to MacOS 8.5.

#2 - have you tried SCSI disk mode? From your message I think you have tried, but I don't think you were successful. To successfully do this you need a SCSI connector for your powerbook that can be switched into the SCSI mode or a cable that is designed for this purpose. Once you do this, you need to make sure the SCSI ID number you choose for your PowerBook is not something that is already used on your 6500. Don't use zero or three (used for CPU and standard for CD drive). There are specific instructions in your PowerBook manual on how to set up the SCSI disk mode. Follow them. To hi-lite, you need to turn off both computers. Connect the SCSI cable, start the PowerBook first, then the 6500. I have found that if the PowerBook doesn't come up on its own using the freeware product SCSIProbe or another program that can search the SCSI chain will get the drive mounted. I used this method when I upgraded my 5300 to MacOS 8.1.

Hope this helps. If you need a little clarification on anything, please email your questions.
