Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Powermac 7300/200
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.6.1

Description:
About a week ago I sent the following request for help.I have as yet not received a reply.

I am a dedicated fan of MacHome, having subscribed since the inception of the magazine. I have a Powermac 7300/200 with 64 mb of Ram, and assumed that with this substantial equipment I could certainly view downloaded photos that friends send me. This I cannot do.

I have installed CanOpener, Stuffit Expander and Adobe Acrobat. None of these will do anything.. In Acrobat I get a message: ”There was an error opening this document. File does not begin with “% PFD.” (What does this mean?) Using Canopener, all I get is a jumbled text message - but no photo. Stuffit Expander doesn't help, either.

Is there a simple all-inclusive software package that will enable me to open ANY type of picture file? The current file I can't open seems to be called a "mime" file, but other types will also not open. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Dear Lawrence,

The best all-around graphics viewer is GraphicConverter, available at http://www.lemkesoft.de/us_gcdownload.html

It will open any image file you can think of. My concern, though, is that what you are trying to download is not an image. Try GraphicConverter by opening the application, going to the File:Open command, and selecting the file you wish to view. If you still have problems, try dropping the file onto the Stuffit Expander application icon and seeing if a new, unencoded file results, then viewing that. In any case, Acrobat Reader is useless to you; it is not used to view images, but specific types of PostScript documents.

Hope that helps.
