Hello,
I am running a G4 766 with 10.4.1. I had my whole system destroyed by Tech-tool Pro (it just lost the drive that contained all the programs) and have now started all over again. The problem now is that my system wants to use the 40 gig original drive whereas i want it to use the 100gig partition in the 120gig drive. how do i get it to change preference? i have tried to use start up preferences but it only shows tiger on the one drive (the smaller one). I would like to re-format the drive that it is using but disk utility wont let me touch that drive.
It also seems that now I am unable to move stuff around, only copy it. For example if I move something into the trash and I want to move it back out it mearly copies the file and wont remove it. How do I remedy this setting?
Finally my DVD burner has started being selective after the reinstall. It now wont burn certain brands of discs like the Sony cd-r discs because it can't recognize them...I tried patch burn 4 but to no avail. I am running a Pioneer 109 DL that has been converted to an XL. The last tech fixed the problem by removing the patch that allowed the drive to become mac recognizable and then he installed toast and then reinstalled the patch I think...if this is correct how do I do this again.
Sorry about all of the questions but the tech that did all the work has disappeared on a year long trip and can't be contacted at present. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers
Tas

Hi Tas, welcome to macosx.com tech support

Ok, in the order you asked. The most likely explanation for not being able to select the 100gb partition in startup disk is that you don't have Tiger installed on it yet (you don't mention whether you have done this yet), and startup disk can't see any drives without a working system installation.

You can't delete the system on the 40gb drive because its the current startup drive, and the OS won't let you mess up/delete the active system installation. To wipe this drive you have to start up from the Tiger install dvd or another active system installation.

I recommend you install Tiger on the 100gb partition first. Just start up from the Tiger dvd and choose the 100gb partition at the "installation destination" stage. I've just tested it by installing Tiger onto my ipod, and installing on the 100gb drive should leave all the files already there all fine and as they were, though for safety i'd always advise having everything backed up.

Once you've installed onto the other drive, start up from it (select it from startup disk or hold alt while the machine starts up and choose it there). Once you've got that running and are happy its all working ok, you can launch disk utility and now should be able to wipe the 40gb drive without any problems.

A note here, during the setup after the installation, Tiger now asks if you want to transfer information from another mac or volume. This would allow you to move network settings, your user folder etc, and might speed up your setup on the other disk. On the other hand, for the cleanest possible installation its normally best to set t up manually (avoids old/corrupt pref and other files clogging up your nice new installation). Its up to you really whether you do this. You can always do it after the setup via the migration assistant (in YourHD>Applications>Utilities), as long as you haven't already wiped the 40gb drive

After that, upgrade to 10.4.1 either through software update (in the apple menu) or by going to the apple support site. It has a bunch of bug fixes and bits, and is definitely worth it (10.4.0 was a bit buggy).

On your dvd issues, i'd first see if the new installation sorts the problems. You should also try repairing permissions, and in fact should definitely do this once you have done the new install (or any major software install). You do this in Disk Utility, under the first aid tab just select you HD and hit "repair permissions". Pleasantly, this is one of the few things you can do to an active system installation, and should be your general first step when you have a problem under macosx.

Hope this helps you out,

regards

Tas, two things i forgot to say,

I suggested repairing permissions as that is the most likely cause of you not being able to move certain files, the machine has decided you don't have the necessary permissions.

Also, if this doesn't sort your cd issues, you'll be on a fresh install without any patches so should be abel to apply them again with no problems if necessary.

Thank you for all your help Owen
I actually tried what you said and found that Tiger would not allow me to begin on the drive that i wanted. So i partitioned the drive that I wanted (100gig and 20gig) and installed the tiger on the 20gig and re-started. Then it asked where I wanted to install and offered me what I wanted, and allowed the installation to occur on the 100gig partition. When i tried to leave the drive as 120gig it started on it but in install it wouldn't allow the same drive to be used hence only allowing the old 40gig drive. Anyway it seems OK now. it's just a matter of installing everything on it again...
As for the burner it seems painfully slow and I still have the problem that it just doesn't like certain discs. Do you think that when I installed Patchburner 4 that i changed the work that the tech had done and altered my drive from an XL back to a DL? Any ideas how to fix the problem? Possible firmware upgrades that are more Tiger friendly.
Once again that you for your time

Hi Tas,

I'm glad you got the installing issue sorted one way or another!
I've had a look around but can't find much info the dvd issue, and its not really my field of expertise. I'm going to keep looking, but Im also going to send this back to the open pool so that other techs who know more about pioneer dvd issues can help you out too.

regards,

owen.

Tas,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you on your DVD burner.

When you tried to do a burn, where you using Toast? If so, there is a problem with Toast and OS 10.4.1. Roxio is working on an update and they promise it will be released this coming week.

If you are not using Toast, what program are you using?

Hello Cheryl
Yes I am using Toast. But like I said the last tech cured the problem by (i think) removing the patch that allowed the Pioneer Drive to work on the apple installing Toast and then reinstalling the patch. I'm not sure if this is what he did but it is how I think I remember it. If this is the case who to I do the same thing? Where do you begin in removing a patch?
In my attempt to fix the problem myself I used patchburner 4. I am worried that I changed the firmware with patchburner 4. Is that possible? Could patchburner 4 have changed my burner from an Pioneer 109 XL back to a DL? My burner now acts really strange and seems to be much louder and slower than usual, hence the concern. If it has how do I turn it back and remove the patchburner 4? If it is at all possible!
I'll keep an eye out for the Roxio update and hope that it cures this problem.
Thank you for your time and effort.

Tas,

I did not check the 'What's new in the new release', but generally a patch will change only parts of a program.

I have been keeping an eye on Roxio for that update to Toast. We have to wait for that before you can test things out.

Hi Cheryl
I tried to download the upgrade but I am unable to use my password...and the system wont go past a certain point...so I am unable at present to gain access to the update. I have left an email for roxio. hopefully they'll get back to me soon. Am I the only one (that you know of) that is having this problem or are there others?
