Can you tell me how do I connect to the internet. Do I need a driver if so where? I have AOL broadband BT Voyager 105 on my PC. Would I be able to connect both PC and Mac on the internet using say an Ethernet cable, would I need anything else and if so how do I do it.

Julie,

The Mac does not need any programs to connect to the internet. All you need is an ethernet hub connected to the BT Voyager. Then from there the PC and the Mac are connected to the hub with ethernet cables.

It all sounded so simple...On your recommendation I have purchased a 5-port Fast Ethernet Switch (couldn't get a Hub) but I am beginning to wonder if they are different. I have installed the Switch and have had problems trying to share as I have it says I do not have permission to use the network resource? I still cannot see PC from Mac nor have internet connection from Mac

Julie,

A hub and a switch are basically the same. The difference is the switch transfers data faster.

The ethernet switch should have included instructions on how to set it up using a web site. Did you follow those instructions? Exactly what model ethernet switch did you get? I can get the instructions and give you step by step instructions.

Julie,

Double check to make sure you have the following set up:

Broadband modem connected to your phone line. Ethernet cable connected from broadband modem to Netgear. (Broadband Modem power cord connected to good outlet).
Ethernet cable from Netgear to PC
Ethernet Cable from Netgear to Mac
NetGear power pack plugged into good outlet.

Is the Netgear power light on? Are the lights on in the ports where the ethernet cable is connected to the Netgear ports?

If so - then the next step is to set up the Mac to activate Ethernet. AOL does not have software for the Mac OS X for their broadband. In reality you do not need any software.

(On the Mac) Go to System Preferences (light switch in the dock) and select Network.
In the Show option (under Location at the top of the Network window) select Network Port Configurations.
You will see a list of the types of connections you can have.
Make sure Built in Ethernet is check marked and all the others are unchecked.

Now in the Show select Network Status. You should have only Built in Ethernet showing.

Now in Show select Built in Ethernet.

The window that appears will give you many options right under the Show menu.
Click on TCP/IP if that is not already selected.
The first line Configure IPv4 select Using DHCP
Click on the Apply Now button at the bottom right.

Click on Ethernet tab
Set Configure to Automatically

Click on Proxies
At the very bottom is Use Passive FTP Mode with a box next to it. Check that box.

Now click on TCP/IP
IP address and SubMask should be filled in automatically.

Now Close the System Preferences window. You will be prompted to save the settings. Click on save.

You should now be able to surf the web. Let me know how you do.

The first problem is that I cannot connect an Ethernet cable from broadband modem to Netgear as the BT Voyager 105 only has two sockets, a DSL and a USB - no Ethernet connection. Does this mean I need a Router?
Cheryl - Jun 28, 2007 - 2:56 pm

image
Julie,

That just changes things slightly.
The Voyager is connected via USB to the PC
The PC connected via ethernet to Netgear
Mac connected via ethernet to Netgear

Now on the PC, you need to share the internet connection.
Open Network Connections in Control Panel, or right-click on the My Network Places desktop icon and select Properties.
Choose the Sharing tab, and turn on the Enable Internet Connection Sharing for this connection option.

There are step by step instructions and pictures to help you with this here:
http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/ics_xp

Now you should be able to connect with the Mac.

Cheryl, guess what? IT WORKED! Many Many thanks for that I couldn't have done it without you. Hope you don't mind me asking another question relating to Mac/PC. I have made a shared folder on the PC desktop and have gone into and checked Personal File Share on the Mac but how do I view each folder on each Mac and PC?
Cheryl - Jun 28, 2007 - 6:32 pm
image
image
Julie,

That is great news. As for seeing the shared folder - on the Mac go to the Go menu and select Network.
Now give it a few moments and the name of the PC should show up.
Click on it and you will get a connect button to see the shared folders.
A new window will appear with a pull down menu of the folder names. Select the name of the folder, then click on OK.

You should be able to see those files.

The PC should be the same.

Good morning Cheryl, I really do appreciate your help.
Round 3...All I can see is Mac on Mac and PC on PC, what is it I am doing wrong? (I just want to cry!)
Another problem...how do I share my printer which only has USB connection, I have told PC to share?
Cheryl - Jun 29, 2007 - 10:26 am

Julie,

Sharing from the PC is tricky. I found a web site that gives step by step instructions with illustrations to make it easier.
Connect to a Mac from XP
http://www.mac-connect.com/mac_from_win.php

Connect to XP from a Mac
http://www.mac-connect.com/win_from_mac.php

There is a program that makes it easier called Network Magic.
For the Mac:
http://www.networkmagic.com/forums/s...ead.php?t=1906

For the PC
http://www.networkmagic.com/download/

As for sharing the printer - I am assuming that it is connected to the PC.
First - in the Printer properties under sharing you have to give the sharing name something short and sweet. Long names do not work with the Mac printer sharing. i.e. HP LaserJet 1160 should be shortened to Laser.

Now on the Mac, you need to install the Mac version driver of the printer.
Then go to Utilities> Printer Setup Utility
Click on Add
If you don't see the printer in the list, click on more Printers.
A new window will pull down.
In the first pull down menu select Windows Printing.
You should see MShome Workgroup. Click on that then click on choose
Now click on the PC name and click on choose
You should see the printer.
Select it.
Now in the Printer Model pull down menu select the printer driver.
Click on Choose.

Now after a bit, the printer will show up in your list. Depending on the printer model will make it easy or hard. There are some HP models that can not be shared. I have one of those and I had to connect the HP printer to my Ethernet hub in order for the Mac to print to it. (I do have a Windows/Mac network at home).

Hi Cheryl, I bet you thought you'd have a quiet afternoon...sorry.
I have been trying to concentrate on seeing the printer from Mac at the moment. I have gone through your instructions: Yes the printer is connected to the PC via USB. I have downloaded the Mac version driver for the HP printer, okay so far, I go to Printer Setup Utility, add, gives me NOTHING, go to "More Printers" and select Windows Printing, the next drop down says either "Workgroup" which gives me Julie-Dennis-Co (I assume this is the Mac) if I add this all I get asked is Name: Password: which I enter and gives me nothing - if I go back and select the other option in the second drop down under "Network Neighbourhood" it gives me Workgroup, I choose and it just gives me Julie-Dennis-Co again I choose that I then have to enter Name: Password: again and still gives me nothing. Phew.... What can I do next?
Cheryl - Jun 29, 2007 - 5:19 pm
image
image
Julie,
The Julie-Dennis-Co should be the name of the PC. If you have named both the Mac and the PC the same, you will not be able to share anything.

On the Mac - go to System Preferences>Sharing
At the very top is the name of the computer. You can name it JuliesMac. (No spaces or characters).

The name and password it is asking for is the user of the PC. - You can create a user with a user name and password on the PC or just use the main user's name and password. The same goes for sharing on the Mac. From the PC it is asking for the Mac's user name and password.

Now on the PC make sure the printer is set to share with anyone and the name is short.

Now try finding the printer.

On Mac I changed name to JuliesMac, now when I go to Printer Brower Juliesmac comes up, when I choose it says: Connect to the printer "Juliesmac" as: Name: Password: and get nothing. I don't have a password on the PC. How do you set up the user name and password on PC?
I downloaded the network magic on Mac and PC, the PC says I am not connected to the Internet when I am. (I have broadband but it's not in that category it's in Dial-Up but it's not really - I think this happened when I ran AOL automatic diagnostic [a year or two ago] and set it up for me as I was having connection problems) I have installed the Network Magic on Mac but does not give me any other instructed as to what I am supposed to do with it after that. I am just about to give up now as I have no memory left in my little brain, so I shall say a very good night to you. I expect you shall hear from me tomorrow (if you are working that is)
Regards
Julie

Julie,

You should have a user already set up on the PC. Open the Control Panel from the Start menu, and then double click User Accounts.

You should see your user account there.
Click Change an account in the Pick a task list box.
2. Click the account that you want to change.
3. Select the item that you would like to change:
• Click Change the name to change the name that appears on the Welcome screen for the account.
• Click Change the picture to change the picture that is used to represent the user account. You can use any image file on the computer for the user's picture.
• Click Change the account type to change the account type to increase or decrease the user's rights on the computer.
• Click Create/change the password to create or change the password for the user and create or change the password hint.

Network Magic: While it does help to manage the internet - the purpose at this point is to view the shared files.

Network Magic on the PC: Can you see the Mac and the shared files?

Network Magic on the Mac will allow you to see the shared folders. Open it. The window that appears should show you your computer as well as the PC. Click on the arrow next to the PC name. The shared folders should appear. Now click on one of the folders. Click on Open Share. A new window will open showing all the files (pictures or documents).

If nothing shows up, the PC is not set up correctly to share. Do you have a firewall installed on the PC? This will prevent the Mac from accessing the printer and the shared files. You have to open the Firewall program and allow the Mac to access the PC.

Hi Cheryl
Not getting any closer with this. I have made password on PC but it still rejects it on Mac. I cannot use Network on PC as it will not allow me to install (issue with Network Magic I think). I have download printer driver and cannot install that...add printer from defaul browser - nothing, more printers, windows printing, Juliesmac choose - nothing. If I go to IP asks for address?

Just had a major breakthrough...managed to print from Mac through PC. It was the Firewall, I could see it was probing and just gave it the IP address permission and I was then able to see the shared printer and printed a page!!!!!

Julie,

That is good. Now for the shared files. Are you able to see the files on the PC using Network Magic?

Does the PC give you any error message as to why it will not install? Wait - I thought you had Network Magic installed - or is this problem connected to the fact that it can not detect the internet? I wonder if there is a preference to tell it to look at USB.

No I cannot see files on either. When I install Network Magic on PC it says "No Internet Connection Detected" click repair still cannot connect. I did read troubleshoot: Connected but no connection and went through their procedure but it still did not work.

Julie,

I suspect that the PC's firewall is causing this. Check out this web site. It has step by step instructions to configure the firewall program to allow Network Magic to access the internet.

Keep me posted on how you do.

I have looked on the network magic support for McAfee 10.0 but mine is not there, it's either 7.0 or 9.0 and they are both different to mine so I couldn't proceed. What I have done is upgraded (as mine had expired) hoping to download but they are now sending it by post...

Julie,

I don't understand when you state that you upgraded. - Upgraded what?

That same page also has generic instructions that they say can apply to any firewall. Does those instructions help you?

I upgraded my McAfee Security Centre because it was out of date (over a year old) and because it wasn't listed on Network Magic. The instructions were not helpful as they were completely different to what I have. I went through both 7.0 and 9.0 and didn't match what I have when I proceed their instructions.

Julie,

Scroll down on that same page under the list of firewall programs. There is generic instructions. Give that a try.

Julie,

You have the Mac connected to the internet and printing...so we have half the problem solved.

As for the file sharing and Network Magic, I think the trouble is your firewall. Did McAfee come with a manual that can help you open the ports needed for Network Magic and allow the connection?

Since I am not a Windows expert (Nor McAfee) I do have a few suggestions:

Contact McAfee support and ask for help.

Contact NetworkMagic Support and ask for help.

I can reopen this ticket for a Windows tech to continue the help. Macosx.com does have a Windows free support side at NoWonder.com. I can flip this ticket there for you. Should I do that?

I have just gone into McAfee support and couldn't see my version for solving...I contacted Network Magic yesterday but I am still waiting for a reply.

I think it would be better if you could transfer this ticket over to a PC tech as you said yourself the Mac problem has been solved.

May I take this opportunity of thanking you for all your support, you have been a great help to me.
