When you use Shift+Apple+4 to take a picture of a part of a screen, you get a.pdf. How can I change that to come out with a .jpg? I have searched HELP and the Missing Manual, to no avail.
Thanks.

Before I can answer, I need to know if you're using Mac OS 10.4 Tiger. If so, you can open the .pdf in "preview", the built in PDF and photo viewer. Then, click file>save as, and you can select ".jpg" as the format.
Let me know if this works or if you need any more help

You could try an online solution like Zamzar-just upload your file and choose a format (jpg in your case) to convert it to.
The url is
http://www2.zamzar.com/
Let me know how this works!

Leonard, strangely enough, it does not offer jpg when converting from a pdf. I wonder why? Barbara

Open Terminal in your Utility folder. Copy/paste this;
defaults write NSGlobalDomain AppleScreenShotFormat .jpg
See if this works for you.

Bobw,
Just back from the other computer and, no, I still get pdfs. It seems to me that once, many moons aqo, I changed my own computer to create jpgs but I cannot remember how I did it. Drives me crazy and I appreciate everyone's help. Any more suggestions?

Download TinkerTool (free)
http://www.bresink.de/osx/TinkerTool.html
This will allow you to set the format you want.

Bobw,
I have downloaded and opened TinkerTool but do not see how that will help with translating a pdf to a jpg. Am I being just plain dense?

TinkerTool v 3.7, under the General Tab, you should see 'Screenshot file format"

Bobw,
I do not see that statement under General tab or anywhere else. The only TinkerTool that shows up at the site you gave me and through VersionTraker is v. 3.7b. Could that be the problem? Beta version?

Bob, I think we need to give up. Enough already! It works like a charm on my Mac (10.4.10) and not on Larry's eMac (10.3.9) and I cannot seem to update his eMac.
He is a teacher and needs pdfs on Blackboard which will not take pdfs. I guess I will continue making the translation for him. I was hoping I could get out from under that chore.
Thank you all for your ideas and concerns. What a great site and terrific techs!

Bob, that works on my machine but not on Larry's "lesser" version. You are a dear to keep trying but I have given up

Sorry. There must be something corrupted in the system itself if none of these things work.
