Knowledge Level: I'm New!
Problem: Combination
Computer Type:
Model: PowerMac 8100/80
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.6.1

Description:
On startup the Mac always brings up the improper-shutdown warning, even if it was shut down correctly. I have a suspicion that this is the result of a corrupt preference--but if so, which one? (I've zapped the PRAM already, and doubt that's the problem--I've noticed that the boot volume seems to store the information concerning whether or not it was shut down correctly.)

Thank you.

Hi welcome come to Nowonder

You may want to print this out so you have it in front of you while doing this.

Direct from Apple - the Message is activated by an invisible file named Shutdown Check. The file may be corrupted. The shutdown check file regenerates if removed like a preference File.

Here goes: 1 Open Stickies
2. Type "shutdown check" on a note.
3. Close the note window. The "Save As" Dialog box will appear.
4. Save the note to the root level of the hard disk. A message indicating an exisiting "shutdown check" file will appear.
5. Click Replace.
6. Open the hard disk
7. Locate the Stickie note "shutdown check".
8. Put it in the trash.
9. Restart
10. Empty Trash

Hopefully that will take care of it. Best regards sharona@nowonder
