TICKET ARCHIVE -> Simcity 4 Doesn't Launch

Hi,

After installing the 2 cd game (SimCity 4), I try to run it (double clicking in the game icon) and, after a glimpse of a black screen (like as it seems that it would work), an error message returns: "SimCity 4 will run with the software driver when next launched".

I've searched a bit over some forums and it appears that more users have the same problem - but I couldn't find the answer to solve it.

Any ideas or clues?

About my mac: it's an iMac DV G3 400Mhz with 256MB and 13GB of harddisk (about 1,5MB free), running a Mac OS X.3.9

Is there any video card update available (and necessary) for this sort of mac?

Tks in advance for the response.

Hi Alexandre,

The problem may be that your Mac doesn't meet the system requirements for the game. I will post them from the games website for simcity 4.
System Requirements:
# Operating System: Mac OS X 10.2.3 or later
# CPU Processor: PowerPC G3 or later
# CPU Speed: 500MHz or faster
# Memory: 256 MB or higher
# Hard Disk Space: 2.4GB free disk space
# Video Card (ATI): Radeon 7500 or better
# Video Card (NVidia): GeForce2 MX or better
# Video Memory (VRam): 32 MB or higher
# Media Required: CD Drive
Also this was taken from their website support page.

SC4: "Will Run with Software Driver when Next Launched" error message

Issue
When launching SimCity 4, the game displays an error message that says "Will run with Software driver when next launched." It then quits. Launching it again gives the same thing, so it's stuck in a loop. What's wrong?

Discussion
That error message most likely means that your computer's video hardware does not meet the necessary requirements. As the box points out, this game needs an ATI Radeon or NVidia GeForce video chipset, with at least 32 MB of video RAM (VRAM). If you do not have this, it displays that error message and quits.

You can check to see what you have in your computer by opening the Apple System Profiler utility, and look for display card in the Devices and Volumes tab.

Hope this will clear up your issue.

Thanks for using www.macosx.com

Regards
Eddy

Tks, Eddy, for your answer.

It's quite frustrating to know that (specialy if playing the game might mean buying a new Mac), but it gave a precise explanation to the problem.

Tks again for the attention and the direct and quick answer.
