I just tried to download the new version of itunes.. it says "not enough free disk space. try deleting documents and restart the download" but I have nearly 200GB free. I just don't understand what the problem could be. I've never had this happen before.

That is strange, but is that an error in Software Update or your Web browser? I would try restarting the computer or using Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions on your hard disk?

Yes, it is strange. I tried restarting the imac. I wouldn't expect that to be the problem at all, and it wasn't. So I used the software update feature and it downloaded the new itunes version just fine.
Oh wait a minute.. now that you mention it, I did check the 'locked' box under desktop info. Apparently, that is the problem after trying it again.
I apologize for the inconvenience. For some reason my 'Mac HD' icon kept appearing in different locations on my desktop. That's why I checked 'locked' assuming it would lock the icons in place. Oh well.. live and learn. Thank you so much for the help.

That's a new one on me. The Desktop is like any other folder in the system, with a Lock checkbox to prevent writing to the folder. There's a hidden file in each folder that tells the Finder the view options set for it. Not sure what would cause the hard disk to change places; I prefer not to have my hard disks appear on the Desktop at all. Instead, I just open a new Finder window.
