We've recently done the 10.4.8 upgrade on an iMac G5 (late 2004 model I think), and ever since we've had problems with the computer not waking up after being put to sleep (it sounds like it's starting up and the fan comes on, but screen stays blank).

We tried setting the energy saver for "put to sleep when inactive.." and that usually works for waking it up later, but likely as not it then won't go to sleep at all.

Going on other posts I've seen, we've reset the SMU - no change. Some posts have mentioned problems when using USB drives - true, we've recently been using one and might have occasionally left it in after putting the computer to sleep, but we had no problems until we did the upgrade.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Bertie

HI Bertie,

That is so frustrating! I read your post and it sound slike you've already tried some troubleshooting ideas so I went over to the Apple site and looked for the manual for your iMac G5. In the troubleshooting guide it suggests the following unless you have already tried it:

Using Apple Hardware Test
You can use Apple Hardware Test to help determine if there is a problem with your
iMac G5 computer’s hardware.
To use Apple Hardware Test:
1 Disconnect all external devices from your iMac G5 except the keyboard and mouse.
If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it.
2 Insert the Mac OS X Install Disc 1 that came with your iMac G5.
3 Restart your iMac G5 and hold down the Option key as it starts up.
4 Click Apple Hardware Test when the list of available startup volumes appears.
5 Click the right arrow.
6 When the Apple Hardware Test main screen appears (after about 45 seconds), follow
the onscreen instructions.
7 If Apple Hardware Test detects a problem, it displays an error code. Make a note of the
error code before pursuing support options. If Apple Hardware Test does not detect a
hardware failure, the problem may be software-related.
For more information about Apple Hardware Test, see the Apple Hardware Test Read
Me file on the Mac OS X Install Disc 1.

Trying the hardware test will tell a story of whether this is hardware or software related. If the hardware is ok... it's a software problem. Just a matter of narrowing down the possibilities.

See if that makes a difference.... and thanks for choosing Macosx.com!

Regards,
Carolyn :-)

Well we've had some distractions from this problem in that we first tried running some of the "spring cleaning" software which somehow ended up resetting the printer driver and a whole bunch of other preferences. It's taken us a whole lot of troubleshooting and finally downloading new printer software to get the printer working again.

Meanwhile we did the Hardware Test and got a clean bill of health there.

So, the sleep/wake up problem remains

Ok.. since the sleep/wake problems still exist after trying all the troubleshooting ideas that Apple offers on their site, do you have a nearby Apple Store or an Apple retailer? Here's how to find an Apple Store. After you click this link, scroll all the way down. There is a pop menu available for a store near you.
http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPL...cts/AppleStore If you don't see an Apple Store close by check your Yellow Pages for an Apple retailer. It really sounds like your Mac needs service.

Regards,
Carolyn :-)
