Description:
Recently I discribed to you how slow internet travel was with frequent freezes and disconnects from AOL. You suggested a new 56K modem. We looked into the catalog and there are so many choices with so many more requirements, we can't make heads or tails of what would be compatible with our "Prima donna" computer. Please be specific with brand, model, etc since it's Greek to us. thank you so much for all your help. You may keep us Macintosh, after all.

Hello Betty:
Although I wasn't the person helping you the first time, I can make recommendations for a new modem. Looking at a catalog here on my coffee table, there are several good choices. I have had very good experience with US Robotics 56k V.90 Faxmodem, and also with the Global Village 56k V.90 Fax/Modem. In my catalog they list for $98 and $125, respectively, although I think you could find them cheaper at
www.outpost.com. Both brands have a solid reputation.
I am assuming you need an external modem, one that sits along side your Mac, as opposed to an internal modem which is installed inside the machine. Whichever you require, both manufacturers make external and internal modems. Given that you have a Performa 6400, you don't need the PC Card style modems which are intended for Powerbook (laptop) computers. I personally prefer external modem even though they are slightly more costly since I can see the read-out lights and manually turn it on/off if needed.
Hope this helps.
