Hi Jack, welcome to Nowonder, I'm robertw.
iMac's are known for freezing with only 32Mb of ram installed. The first thing I would do is get more ram, at least 64Mb.
As far as the browser opened when using Sherlock, you can choose which browser you want Sherlock to use in the Internet Control Panel in your System Folder, inside the Contol Panel folder. Just open that control panel, click on the Web tab, at the bottom you can choose the browser you want to use with Sherlock.
You may wan to give Sherlock more memory to operate. To do this, open the System folder, then open the Apple Menu items, the just highlight Sherlock. Go to File Menu, down to Get Info, in the window that opens you can increase the Preferred memory for Sherlock.
If Sherlock is giving you a specific error message, let me know what it is.
One final thing, get either Norton Utilities or TechToolPro. Either or both of these utilities are a must for Mac's. Run one of them on your disk to check for problems. I run both every week to make sure I catch problems before they become major. This could help with the slow down.
