SandySRT - Jan 30, 2008 - 10:52 pm
I have been using iPhoto for a while with a pc card adapter. I have 4 card adapters, 2 for compact flash, and 2 other multi-card readers. Suddenly, none of these card readers open iPhoto when inserted. I have not changed any settings, and am wondering if I can get that feature back.
I also recently read about Image Capture and I am tempted to import photos with that, so I can choose what to import, but it says that it also replicates photos if we use Image Capture first, and then import images into iPhoto.
So 2 questions...
1. how can I get my card adapters to automatically open iphoto again
2. if I opt to use image capture and then import into iPhoto, if I un-check "copy items to the iPhoto Library", in the Advanced Tab of Preferences, will I save myself from having to go in and delete duplicate images on my hard drive to save space?
Is there an easier way? It took me a while to set things up, but I now have multiple Libraries, which I manage with iPhoto Library Manager. I store only my primary iPhoto folder on my PowerBook, with my working libraries on a WD External drive small enough to take with my laptop. I back up all these libraries to a separate network Raid storage drive. This was the only way I could regain disk space.
Seems like a lot of work, but I need to make sure nothing gets lost. Please tell me if there is a better way.
Thanks for your help.

1. Open iPhoto, go to "Preferences" and click the "General" icon. Choose "iPhoto" from the "Connecting camera opens:" pop-up menu.
2. Yes

Hi Allan, that preference has been checked all along...and suddenly it stopped working. Any other ideas?
tubajensen - Feb 1, 2008 - 4:48 am
Had you been using the cards in another camera when this happened?
Allan
SandySRT - Feb 1, 2008 - 12:46 pm
Hi Allan, I have 2 CF cards and 2 Smart Media cards and have always used the same cards, in the same cameras.
The cards work, because they show up on my desk top...they just don't automatically load iPhoto...even tho the preferences are set that way.
Now what? :-)
tubajensen - Feb 2, 2008 - 7:43 am
Sorry, no ideas :-(
Do you want me to reopen your question for other techs to view?
Allan

yes please!!!

Sandy,
Try this and let me know if it helps.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences
Go to the view menu and select by list. This makes it easier to find specific files.
Now locate and trash the following:
com.apple.ImageCaptureApp.plist
com.apple.iPhoto.plist
com.apple.iPhoto.plist.saved
Close the window, empty the trash. Now check the System Preferences>CDs & DVDs
Make sure that iPhoto is selected to open when you insert a picture CD.
Now give one of your memory sticks a try out.

Hi Cheryl....
lol...glad to see someone actually read my entire question before they answered!
Interestingly...when I went to trash the files you mentioned, I can only find the first 2...com.apple.iPhoto.plist.saved is missing and I have searched for it. Perhaps that is my issue. I stopped when I realized that file could not be located, figured you would want to know. Now what?
Also, just want to clarify something you made me think about when you said "make sure iPhoto is selected to open when you insert a picture CD." I am working with pcmcia cards, 2 CF and 2 smartmedia. My media cards go into these and then when I insert them into the slot on my Powerbook G4, my iPhoto is supposed to automatically open, and show the media card. This has nothing to do with a picture CD....although I am now seeing that when I insert a photo CD, it doesn't show up in the left window of my iPhoto, which I need to open manually. I have already set the preferences correctly, and nothing has changed in that regard.
At this point, the only way I can get photos is to import them, so I basically don't have the preview that I am used to.
So now that I have clarified that issue, what do you want me to do, since one of the 3 files you mentioned is missing.
Thanks for your help.
Cheryl - Feb 3, 2008 - 1:12 pm
Sandy,
Do not worry about not finding that one preference file. I look at my machine as an example and to make sure of the steps I give you.
Try this:
Go to Home>Library>Cache
Locate the iPhoto folder, open it and trash all the folders in there.
Close the window and empty the trash.
You should also trash the one preference file you did find and empty the trash.
Now go to Home>Pictures>iPhoto Library
Look for a file named Library.cache (you may or may not have this) and trash it if you do have it.
Open the folder Albums
If you have a file named Last Import, trash it and empty the trash.
Give a memory card a try and let me know how you do.
Did you move any iPhoto files from your home folder to another location?
Did you install any programs just before this happened? Sometimes when you install a program from a camera, it will take ownership over iPhoto.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 3, 2008 - 1:16 pm
Hi Cheryl...knew it took a woman...
Yes...I have been trying to make space on my hard drive so I created libraries on an external folder and dragged folders from my home library over. I have quite a volume of pix so it was a very tedious project.
I never use the programs from my cameras, I just use the media card in the pcmcia card...so I haven't installed anything.
Now what? :-)
Cheryl - Feb 3, 2008 - 4:39 pm
Sandy,
Because you moved the iPhoto Library folder, it does not know where to go with your photos.
When you open iPhoto, does it show all of your library of photos? If you do, then that is not the problem.
Try this:
Go to Applications and open Image Capture
If you don't have a media stick on your computer you will get a warning that no device is connected. That is okay.
Now go to the Image Capture menu and select Preferences
In General you will see Camera.
Select iPhoto in the pull down menu
If iPhoto does not show in the menu, select Other.
You will get a window where you can go to Applications and click on iPhoto.
In the sharing tab, uncheck share my devices.
Now click on okay and quit Image Capture.
Now give it a try and keep me posted.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 3, 2008 - 4:57 pm
HI...no no....my libraries and folders all function perfectly...I can change between them and find them all. The ONLY issue is that when I load a media card into my slot on my computer, it is supposed to START iphoto...that used to happen, but now it doesn't.
When I do your suggestions for Image Capture...I can only get as far as selection iPhoto...which was already selected. There are not other windows, and no sharing tabs to UNCHECK "share my devices."
Any more ideas?
Cheryl - Feb 3, 2008 - 5:36 pm
Sandy,
I have to ask, is there images on those media cards? Have you reformated the cards recently?
Do you remember when this started? Something you installed or did just before this.... that will be the clue.
What version OS X are you running and what version of iPhoto do you have?
Try this:
Insert the media card to the computer, then go to Applications and start up Image Capture.
Does Image Capture see the 'device' ?
If so, tell it to open iPhoto.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 3, 2008 - 6:04 pm
Hi...ok...yes..lol.there are images...as I can see them if I look at the media card on my desk top. NO...the cards have not been re-formatted recently. I am running 10.5.1 and iPhoto '08, Version 7.1.1
When did this start...let's just say I noticed it over the past few weeks. I take a lot of pix, and ALWAYS off load my photos in the same manner, and it ALWAYS started iPhoto.
I tried your last request with my CF card and Image Capture...my card has 350 images on it, which I can see from Finder or my desktop...Image Capture DOES NOT see the device. The preference is already set to open iPhoto...but this does not happen...even from this program. I also tried it with my SM card that has 35 images on it...NOTHING.
You never told me what to do about the 3 files...remember...I couldn't find the last one...so we never tried it. Do I need that file?
And the ONLY thing I have been doing in regard to 'anything new" on my computer, is moving files to an external hard drive to make more space.
What's next?
Cheryl - Feb 3, 2008 - 11:09 pm
Sandy,
Those three preference files-you have only two and that is okay - drag them to the trash and empty the trash.
Give it a try and see if iPhoto opens.
How many pictures do you have in your library of iPhoto? It could be that you have hit a limit. Do you have pictures that are old and won't be using much? What you can do is use iPhoto to burn a CD of those pictures. Then delete them from iPhoto's library. While they say iPhoto does not have a limit, it does tend to misbehave when there are many in the library.
With so many pictures - you might want to try iPhoto Library Manager
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id...ibrary-manager
It will help keep your Libraries in better order.
Keep me posted on what happens when you trash those two preference files.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 4, 2008 - 7:50 am
Hi Cheryl....why does it suddenly seem like you and I are not on the same page?
"Yes...I have been trying to make space on my hard drive so I created libraries on an external folder and dragged folders from my home library over. I have quite a volume of pix so it was a very tedious project. "
"my libraries and folders all function perfectly." and I have been using iPhoto Library Manager for a few years...so I have done all this correctly. And at this point my Library is smaller than it used to be when it worked perfectly.
Any other thoughts?
Cheryl - Feb 4, 2008 - 5:39 pm
Sandy,
We are on the same page, I just need to make sure of what you have done. First, When you drag folders over to the external drive, You are creating room on your main hard drive, but that is not lessening the number of image files within iPhoto.
iPhoto does have a limit as to how many images to hold. Backing up on a CD, then deleting those files from iPhoto library will lower the number of images, and allow more to be imported automatically.
Did you trash those preference files and did that do anything?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 4, 2008 - 6:30 pm
I really understand all this Cheryl...and like I said, I have painstakingly created libraries, moved images, and deleted files from the iPhoto library.
I did trash the preferences...and nothing. Any other ideas?
Cheryl - Feb 4, 2008 - 8:38 pm
Sandy,
I do have an idea and it may sound silly, but just may work.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences and trash the com.apple. finder.plist
Restart the computer, then empty the trash.
Now give it a try.
Have you tried to create a new user in system preferences>Accounts. Allow it to administer the computer. Now log out of you and log into the new account.
See if iPhoto behaves correctly and let me know what happens.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 4, 2008 - 9:14 pm
Hi Cheryl...I have been running all my backups, and my last iPhoto Library that I off-loaded will take thru the night to back up. So I probably won't get to your suggestions until tomorrow.
I understand what you want me to do, I know a New User account can see if iPhoto runs correctly. If I have a chance in the am before I leave, I will delete the file, restart the computer, then empty the trash. And then log in to the new User Account.
Actually...I figured I'd delete the file right now...when I found it, it has the current time on it. Since I'm doing a backup of iPhoto right now, and I'm not sure what will happen if I delete it... I'll wait until tomorrow when the backup is done.
I'll keep you posted.
Cheryl - Feb 4, 2008 - 9:28 pm
Sandy,
Don't trash the file until after your backups are done. I don't want you to lose any files.
I await your report.
Cheryl
Cheryl - Feb 6, 2008 - 6:45 pm
Sandy,
How are you doing?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 6, 2008 - 6:57 pm
Hi Cheryl...well, I spent about 3 hours at the Apple Store yesterday, and they ended up re-installing iPhoto, and showed me how the cards worked and opened the program...however, when I got home...it didn't work anymore! UGH!
Cheryl - Feb 6, 2008 - 7:14 pm
Sandy,
What do you have connected to the computer? It worked in the Apple Store, then something is preventing it from working at home.
Did you use the same media reader in the Apple Store as well as at home?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 6, 2008 - 7:46 pm
yes...it is the exact same media card...the only thing connected to my computer is my Time Machine backup, and an external backup...same as always
Cheryl - Feb 6, 2008 - 8:24 pm
Sandy,
Can you try an experiment? Is Time machine backing up to an external drive?
If so, eject the external drive, disconnect it from the computer, then give the media card a trial run.
Let me know how you do.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 8, 2008 - 8:45 pm
SandySRT - Feb 8, 2008 - 8:46 pm
Hi Cheryl...I thought I had already responded to this....I ejected the Time machine, rebooted, and then tried again...NOTHING. :-(
Cheryl - Feb 9, 2008 - 7:47 am
Sandy,
This is frustrating. How can it work for the Apple tech and not work when you bring it home?
Besides internet, what else is connected to your computer? A printer perhaps?
Try deleting the com.apple.iPhoto.plist file from home>Library>Preferences folder, empty the trash and give it a try.
Did you try creating a new user to see if iPhoto works with the new account?
Cheryl
Cheryl - Feb 12, 2008 - 6:01 am
Sandy,
How are you doing?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 14, 2008 - 12:32 pm
Hi...sorry it's been a few days, but I decided that it was more important to make sure my backups were working properly, so I have my libraries, as opposed to deleting files and losing some of them. I tried deleting the plist, as well as creating a new user...no luck.
Cheryl - Feb 14, 2008 - 6:56 pm
Sandy,
Did you try creating a new user and seeing if iPhoto opens for the new user?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 14, 2008 - 8:28 pm
Cheryl...that was the last line of my response....
Cheryl - Feb 14, 2008 - 9:20 pm
Sandy,
Sorry, I missed that last line. It's been a long day for me.
I am still wondering why it worked in the Apple Store and not in your home. Is this the same machine you took to the Apple Store?
Are you connecting the media reader direct to the computer or are you using a USB hub? Do you have the power adaptor plugged into the powerbook?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 14, 2008 - 9:31 pm
Yes...same machine....my media is in a pcmcia card, plugs directly into the laptop....however, I use a USB hub to connect my time machine drive and my other drive which houses about 8 other libraries....and I just put each of these drives on it's own usb, powered, hub
Cheryl - Feb 14, 2008 - 9:41 pm
Sandy,
That explains it (well maybe). That hub is the one thing that is different from home and the Apple Store.
Give this a try. Eject the other drives as well as Time Machine (Turning off time machine). Then pull the usb hub off the powerbook.
Now give the media card a try.
Let me know what happens.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 14, 2008 - 10:01 pm
ok...both hubs unplugged, time machine off...media card inserted...NOTHING
Cheryl - Feb 14, 2008 - 10:06 pm
Sandy,
I am stumped. I really do not know why it worked in the Apple Store and not in your home.
Do you want me to send this back to the que to see if another tech can help?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 16, 2008 - 10:56 am
no not really...just might be getting a new mac soon!
Cheryl - Feb 16, 2008 - 11:57 am
Sandy,
What model are you looking at?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 16, 2008 - 1:31 pm
Well, I'm hoping that they will be releasing new versions of the MacBook Pro with the new touchpad. According to the rumors, it's about time.
What do you think? I know I want at least 2 gigs of memory, and I can always update the hard drive.
Cheryl - Feb 16, 2008 - 2:29 pm
Sandy,
I am not sure when the Pro will be updated and I really don't count on rumors. They have been wrong. The new Air, while small and lightweight, doesn't have the features you and I have been a custom to. Ethernet is an option you have to pay for as well as an optical drive. I am not sure why it was decided to make those optional additions. And it only has one USB port. For what you get, it is high priced.
Is there a reason why you are looking at the books? Have you checked out the iMac's or the towers? With the amount of pictures you handle, I would think the Mac Pro with a 20 inch display would tickle your fancy.
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 16, 2008 - 2:36 pm
portability....that's my #1 preference
Cheryl - Feb 16, 2008 - 3:27 pm
Sandy,
You could wait for the new book pro's to come out, or get one now. In the meantime, even though iPhoto does not open automatically, can you import your photos manually? That is, open iPhoto and then import?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 16, 2008 - 4:24 pm
yes...it's just a pain...just learned about icapture..may try that
Cheryl - Feb 16, 2008 - 4:48 pm
Sandy,
We did check the preferences in Image Capture. Try this:
Insert the media stick
Go to Applications and open Image Capture
Does it see the media?
Does it open iPhoto?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 17, 2008 - 8:36 pm
No to media card...no to iphoto...and it is set to open in image capture preferences.
Cheryl - Feb 17, 2008 - 10:37 pm
Sandy,
I am stumped. When you stick in the media card, does it show up on your desktop? If you start iPhoto, does it see the card and ask if you want to import?
Cheryl
SandySRT - Feb 17, 2008 - 10:42 pm
yes...shows on desktop, no...iPhoto does NOT see the card, but I can go to it if I select import
Cheryl - Feb 17, 2008 - 11:30 pm
Sandy,
I think iPhoto is just being a brat. It worked before. It worked at the Apple Store.
I am sorry, but I just can't think of anything else for you to try.
Cheryl
