Hey!

I have 3 questions I hope you can assist me with.

1 - I recently contacted you regarding Software Upgrades for my new EMac 1.42GHZ. I have an 'Unlimited' Dial-Up service that is based on 2 hour connection periods. I connect for 2 hours, then I either disconnect or my ISP Server disconnects me. I can then connect up again straight away. The problem with this is that I have a few Software Upgrades available where the files are too large to download in that time frame. I have contacted my ISP and there is nothing they can do as the Server is set to do this automatically. They also recommended I get hold of a Download manager that would save the part of the file that had been downloaded in the 2 hour period, then reconnect and download the further elements (??) Confused as my EMac has an inorporated Download Manager, but what they have suggested has confused me a liitle!

Is there any other way I can access/get hold of these Upgrades. Would Apple supply them on a disc for example. One of these Upgrades is Java based and I seem to be having trouble with messages sent from EBay not arriving at my E-Mail account, I was wondering if that was related to this Upgrade.

2 - I presume after checking my manuals that Apple EMacs do not come with Firewall Security fitted as standard. Can you recommend one.

3 - One my earlier questions related to your recommendations for Website Software. You recommended Rapidweaver 3.2 available as 'Download Only'. My latest issue of Macworld magazine reviews both the above and Freeway 4 Pro. Now I seem to be 'stuck between a rock and a hard place'.

What I am looking for is Software that is straightforward and not too difficult to master. Rapidweaver 3.2 get's great reviews but it's 'Cons' involve areas that are a concern. The image-editing and template weakness (altough I know I can purchase more from Online suppliers) are the major concern as I want the site to not only have good content, but to encase this content with some style. I don't want it to look like a 4yr old has designed it!

Your helpers advised me that there was a steep learning curve associated with Freeway 4 Pro which is my preferred choice because of it's many features. Could you please expand on this 'Steep Curve' as It worries me a little!

I have also considered starting off with Rapidweaver, mastering that, then moving up to Freeway - but that is expensive! I would greatly appreciate any advise that may make my decision a little easier.

Thanks
Mark

Hi Mark

MacOS doesn't include a download manager that can do this.

For a download Manager that will resume downloads, Speed Download is what you want;

Apple doesn't supply these updates on disc.

As for the Firewall, it's included. Open the Sharing PreferencePane in the System Preferences under the Apple and you'll see it.

For you other question about website software, please post another question for that. It's best to just post a question for one subject.

To Bobw,

Thanks for the response!
So when I look at the Pane in question it shows:-

Firewall OFF
Click start to prevent incoming Network Communication to all services and ports other than those enabled below. It lists:-

Personal File Sharing
Windows Sharing
Personal Web Sharing
Remote Login-SSH
FTP Access
Apple Remote Desktop
Remote Apple Events
Printer Sharing
IChat Bonjour
ITunes Music Sharing
IPhoto Bonjour Sharing
Network Time

Can I presume that those listed are protected by the Firewall even though it shows 'Firewall OFF' or do I have to activate it in the edit listing??

Thanks again
Mark

If the Firewall is off, then nothing's protected. You would need to Start the Firewall, and put a check in the box next to each service you want running.

Even with the Firewall off, OS X is extremely secure.
