Hi Timothy,

Yep, there are a great deal of freeware or shareware programs available for mac. The standard places to look are:

All program types
www.macupdate.com
www.versiontarcker.com

Games and game demos
www.macgamefiles.com

Geek tools and open source projects
http://sourceforge.net/ this is a major site for all types of open source projects, but since the release of Mac OS X, many of these will run on Mac.

There are many many smaller places but these are the ones to start with.

Let me know if i can help you further,

Owen

Sorry, just before you close the ticket, it seems quite a few people do that, I need help with networking my mac. I dont know if you know anything, but if you dont, please advise me on someone who does. Its just that people always close the ticket before I have my questions answered fully. You are not the first person ive spoken to...

Do you think you can help me?

Thank you

Hi Timothy,

No problem. I've reopened the ticket again. We do tend to close tickets when the question that was asked was solved, as it keeps everything properly filled, and also i believe a feedback request gets sent when we close it as well, which helps us keep the tech support service at a high standard. Also, your question about networking is quiet distinct from that about software, so normally we'd encourage people to open a new question on the new issue. In this case, however, i see that you have already asked two similar questions, at http://www.macosx.com/volunteer/qvie...estionid=18945 and http://www.macosx.com/volunteer/qvie...estionid=19697.

From reading those questions, i see you have tried a bunch of stuff. Clearly you have a working router of the other windows machines would not connect. You also seem to have a working cable ,since you tested it with other machine (a side-note, connecting a mac to a router uses a normal patch cable like a PC, crossover cables are only for directly connecting two machines).

A few things to try:

First, connect the cable and open a browser. If you are in 10.4, tiger (you don't specify your system in your questions), it shoudl, after a moment give you an error page with a button marked something like "Network Diagnostic". This will lead you through a process of trying to troubleshoot your problem. On the left hand side it will also show you it trying to do the various stages of connecting to the internet, which might give you an idea where the problem lies.

Also, you might try setting up a new location, essentially a new set of network preferences, in case some stray setting is causing you problems. If you go to Network, in System Preferences, you can go the the "Location" drop down at the top, and select "New location". In the new location, make sure "Built in Ethernet" is checked on the network port configuration page, then try to connect to the internet (no other configuration should be necessary, the system defaults to DCHP etc).

Other than these, I would start to think about some more fundamental software or hardware problem that would warrant either a wipe and reinstall or a visit to a mac repair place, but i wouldn't go for these more drastic options just yet.

I would wait for a reply from the other techs you have contacted as well. You only replied to James S again yesterday after a long break, and as volunteers, us techs tend to be busy with our day jobs from time to time. If you don't hear from him for another couple of days, put another reply up on the question and it will notify him by email. You also have a question open with Bob W, one of the most experienced and able techs on the site (and a moderator of the macosx.com forum), which you haven't answered to yet, so maybe he can help.

Good luck,

Owen
