While burning a CD -or trying to burn a CD, I had to much in the file for the CD-thus I ended up moving the file back to the desktop and lost the data due to how the mac burn procedure works--I spoke to an Apple tech who explained to me what happened--so all that being said--it there a soft ware that can retrieve any of my missing art files? and should I install a software like Toast to help not to have that type of mistake again??
Thank you, Jill Lamb

Jill,

There is a couple of software programs that just may rescue the missing files.

Data Rescue

Disk Warrior

Data Rescue has a demo that you can try out. Both are very good at finding and rescuing files. Until you get one of these, try not using the computer as files maybe written over the spot where your files use to be.

As for preventing this from happening again, you should move a file to the hard drive when you have to remove a file or two. Checking the total size of your burn is important.
Put the files you want to burn in a folder, then click once on the folder.
Now go to the File Menu and select Get Info.
A new window will open. Check out the General section.
This is where you will see the size of the folder. Compare this size to the blank CD you are using. Most blank CDs have about 650 to 700 MB.

When you need to check the size of each individual file, open the folder then select by list in the View Menu. With the window open, go to the View Menu and select Show View Options. In the new window, check to make sure you have size selected. Now close that options window and check the files. You now can decide which file to move and which to keep in your burn.

Toast can indeed help you with this before you actually burn the CD.
You can read up on it here:

If you are not running 10.4.8 on your Powerbook, you will need to find an older version of Toast that will work on your machine.

Let me know if you need more help or information.
