So our mac mini had a kernal panic (debugger darwin kernal - not sure what all that means but its the main words used in the error message that popped up)
my hubby reinstalled the operating system using the original CDs that came with the Mac and everything was as is when we loaded back up - mail was still in place, photos still in iphoto etc.
we cannot open itunes because it requires at least 10.4.9 and we have 10.4.7 When we do a software update it starts out gets to 1.3mb then the timer starts to say it will take 800 days (or more) to download - then eventually it times out and says network error 1001 cant connect to the internet - which is crap because I can still receive mail, I can still search the net etc.

I am wondering what I can try to get my mac os updated.
I have tried the following (with no luck)
-downloading update direct from apple website
-creating new user account
-deleting softwareupdate.plist in library/preferences and in library/preferences/byhost (suggested by another website - cant remember which one)
-rebooting
-making sure I am connected to the internet using ethernet not airport

it is driving me insane - I want to be able to use my ipod and itunes and it is not letting me!!!

can you help me fix this update error???

Here's the link to the download page for the 10.4.11 combo updater.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...dateintel.html
It's correct for your Intel mini!

Does your connection still timeout, even when downloading from that page?
If you log out, then log back in as another user, do you still get that connection timeout?
Do you get the same timeout, regardless of connection through ethernet or wireless? To be sure of that, turn the Airport card OFF when using ethernet, and UNPLUG your ethernet cable when trying to use wireless.
Do you have enough free space left on your hard drive? For your small hard drive, you should have at least 5 GB of free space, and better than 10 GB is really good...
The 10.4.11 combo update can be downloaded through any other computer, which you can burn to a CD, or copy to a USB flash drive.
That process will get you up-to-date so you can use iTunes (and your iPod) again. You might even find some improvement in the rest of your system after getting that update completed.
Let me know how it goes.

Well I thought I had this resolved - but I dont so here is some more info for you.
My connection still timed out when downloading from that page, even if I logged out then back in as another user. not sure of cables.
Had enough space on hard drive.
I DID download the 10.4.11 combo update from my parents computer - installed and it worked, but now itunes is unresponsive. It plays music but not my movies (i use iskysoft to convert)
iTunes will not even recognise my ipod!!!
I still cannot download any programs from software update OR from the apple site
am going insane!!!
no improvement on the rest of my system after update ARRGGG
Amanda
any suggestions????

Restart the computer holding the shift key from the time the computer goes black till you see the apple logo and the spinning gear. Then when it comes up, try itunes again and see what happens.

Let me know how this works for you for the next possible step

take care
