I am unable to install updates. When I try, I eventually get a message that states:
None of the checked updates could be installed. A networking error has occurred: timed out (-1001). Make sure you can connect to the internet, then try again.
My internet connection is working fine.

Update: The four applications that won't update are:
Quicktime 7.3
iDVD Update 6.0.4
iTunes 7.5
MacOS X 10.4.11
I don't think anything else has updated either, but these are the four that repeatedly come up and that I really need to update.

All of those updates can be downloaded separately from
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
Can you install those updates if you simply download them from the Apple web site and install them manually? For example -
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...dateintel.html

Now I can't even open up the software update app. Goes into perpetual loading mode.
I did go to Apple.com and was able to download updates of iTunes 7.5 and iDVD 6.0.4. Wasn't able to do Quicktime 7.3.1 because you need OS X 10.5 for that.
I am trying to download the OSX 10.4.11 update. It is taking FOREVER. It's been downloading for more than an hour and is only 24.6 MB into the 321 MB download. Time remaining is 13 hours and climbing. Should it be taking this long?

There's separate downloads for Quicktime 7.3.1 for Tiger (10.4), and Panther (10.3), and others.
The combined updater is quite large, but the servers used for that are usually quite fast. Are you on dial-up, and not high-speed? If high-speed, try stopping, then restarting that download.

I was able to download directly from apple.com although it took about 6 hours to download 10.4.11.
However, I'm still having issues with Software Update. Nothing will update through it. Any ideas?

Who is your ISP?
What type of internet connection do you have?
If you have dialup, I usually recommend getting your updates somewhere else. Our shop typically will burn a CD with updates for someone with dial-up. The updates now are just getting too large to be a practical download on dial-up.
If you have a hi-speed connection, then you should get that checked out. Is your other browsing that slow, too?
