hi there!
This is my first time here so howdy....i just wanted to ask i keep getting start up disk problems not anything too hectic but my disk utility keeps saying that it cant repair the volume when i try to repair it, i was wondering what i can do to protect my disk from a total failure are there any other measures i can take if the disk utility cant or wont repair the volume in question apart from a total wipe and reinstall

thanks
gearoid

Howdy!

Boot up with your install cd for your OS (hold c key on restart and hold till the start up screen shows up) and go to File/Open Disk Utility. Do NOT reinstall os x.

Repair Disk and Permissions there and restart (hold down mouse button to eject the cd) and let me know if that fixes it.

You can't do repair disk on a disk that's in use as a system disk.

hi there!

thanks for your quick response but unfortunately i had already tried that approach, it was there it was saying it could not repair the volume....firstly i had tried onyx, gave the system a complete clean, then tried tech tool pro and the same story and then i tried to repair the disk from the mac's own start up install disk utility tool to no effect...thats why i am looking for an alternative to just wiping and starting again...also will this problem persist even when i upgrade to leopard eventually

thanks

Well you didn't say that.

First, back up ALL your files from that drive. It might be headed for the dustbin.

Next, try to boot in Single User Mode and follow these steps -- type fsck -fy and wait for process to finish; type reboot when process is finished: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106388

If that doesn't work then your drive may be hosed.

hey there sorry about taking so much time to get back i thought i had another major problem with my fan but i figured it out i did everything you said and the problem was persisting until i figured out that it could be to do with the install disk itself i was using the 10.3 disk instead of the 10.4 disk as i lost that recently...i just read onj another site that that disk utility is specifically for each install disk ....the 10.3 disk utility is for the 10.3 sisk and the 10.4 is for the 10.4 disk so it was generating false reports.....the problem is still there so trying to lay my hands on a 10.4 disk so to see if i can iron out that problem....will let you know asap....thanks for your help tho
