HI Colin!
I love the Stickies application and use it all the time and mine occasionally quits also but there's an easy fix for that.
Go to: MacintoshHD>Users>Library>Preferences. Open the Preferences folder and locate this file:
com.apple.stickies.plist Drag that file to the Trash and
then empty the Trash. Don't worry... the next time you
launch your Stickies application, your Mac will create a new.plist file for you.
Also, run Disk Utility, which is in your Applications Folder and Repair Permissions. That can cure a lot of ills on a Mac and keep your system stable.
Ok.. if you need further assistance, please post back!

Hi Carolyn,
Thanks for your response, unfortunately that didn't work for me, nothing has changed.

HI Colin,
Ok.. dumping the preference file didn't do the trick... since you are running 10.3.6... can you update to 10.3.9? Or, the Combo Update. There is a bug fix in 10.3.9 for Stickies that could correct your Stickies from quiting or crashing. Read the following:
About the Mac OS X 10.3.9 Update (Delta)
This software updates Mac OS X 10.3.8 to version 10.3.9.
If you have version 10.3, 10.3.1, 10.3.2, 10.3.3, 10.3.4, 10.3.5, 10.3.6, or 10.3.7, use the Combo Update instead.
Important: Please read before installing
To avoid a potential issue that may cause Java applications and Safari to unexpectedly quit, please review this article.
You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you have modified the operating system through other means. (This does not apply to normal application software installation.)
The installation process should not be interrupted. If a power outage or other interruption occurs during installation, use the standalone installer (see below) from Apple Downloads to update.
Installation
You have two ways to update to Mac OS X 10.3.9: Use Software Update or the standalone installer. You only need to use one of these methods to update your computer.
Automatic Software Update
Software Update, located in System Preferences, can automatically download and install the latest Apple software. Software Update may have linked you to this document for additional information about the update.
The update's size may vary from computer to computer when installed via Software Update.
Because some updates are prerequisites for others, you may need to run Software Update more than once to get all available updates.
Standalone installer
Two versions of the installer (Delta and Combo, described below) are available from Apple Downloads as standalone updates. After you download an update, you can use it to update your computer without being connected to the Internet.
The Delta Update installer (described here) will update Mac OS X 10.3.8 to 10.3.9.
The Combo Update installer will update 10.3, 10.3.1, 10.3.2, 10.3.3, 10.3.4, 10.3.5, 10.3.6, 10.3.7, or 10.3.8 to 10.3.9.
The standalone installer, particularly the Combo Update, is useful if you have multiple computers to update and only want to download the update once.
Improvements
This update offers many reliability and compatibility improvements. These are just a few of the enhancements and improvements included:
Stickies
Addresses an issue in which Stickies could unexpectedly quit when creating a new note.
Addresses an issue in which new Stickies are invisible.
Stickies windows can now be minimized (an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.4 through 10.3.8).

Thanks Carolyn,
Before I can update the OS I need to do some file juggling on the various partitions of my computer and this may take some time.
I let you know if I get the problem sorted when I load the new OS update.
Cheers

Hi Carolyn,
I reinstalled a fresh OS10 on another partition and included the combo update and stickies works now ;-) so thanks for that.
For what it's worth, stickies worked as soon as I installed the new system from the installation disks.
Can you tell me how to import my IE favourites from the other partition (is this just a matter of saving the favourites as an HTML file and then just opening it with IE on the new partition?
I also need to know how to import my Safari bookmarks.
Safari help says to export bookmarks from browser as an HTML document but I can't find any way to export bookmarks. If you could give me step by step instructions I'd really appreciated it, the help notes are not particularly clear.
Cheers
Colin

HI Colin!
The Stickies are UNstuck! WTG! Now... onto browser stuff :-)
Export favorite pages
1. On the Window menu, click Favorites.
2. On the File menu, click Export Favorites.
3. Specify a location for the exported file, and then click Save.
Import favorite pages
1. On the Window menu, click Favorites.
2. On the File menu, click Import Favorites.
3. Click the HTML file that contains the links you want to import, and then click Open.
Sharing bookmarks and favorite pages
If you use both Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, you can keep your favorite pages and bookmarks up-to-date by importing them from one application to another.
You can import a Navigator bookmark file at any time. After you import your Navigator bookmark file (Bookmarks.html), you can find your imported bookmarks in the Bookmarks folder in your Favorites list.
When you export your favorite pages, Internet Explorer saves them in an HTML file (Favorites.html), so both Internet Explorer and Navigator can import them.
How to go about Importing/Exporting fav places from another partition is about as far over my head as it can get. I suggest you start a new post here at MacOSX.com for that.
BUT.. you can Save a folder of Bookmarks in Safari in html format. Just to try it, I took my Mac Folder in my Safari bookmarks, copy and pasted the whole folder (Select All, Copy and Paste), into Text Edit. I'm not sure if you take that file and drop it into IE??? I do know that Microsoft is NOT writing any updates for IE for Mac. I use Firefox as a backup now instead.
If I see anything related to what you are trying to accomplish on the partition/bookmark issue, I will post back.

Carolyn,
Thanks for your help, I'm all sorted out now. Ended up keeping the same partition configuration I had. I just moved 0S10 to the larger of the partitions, kept the middle size for OS9 and the smallest size for documents for which I can always archive on CD as the partition fills up.
Cheers
Colin ;-)
