You can continue to use OS 9 in Classic with Tiger. We have not seen an OS update yet that doesn't support it.

Booting into OS 9 native is a hardware issue, not related to OS X. If your Mac is capable of doing it now, it always will be. Only Macs manufactured after a certain date are incompatible with booting into OS 9 alone.

Your best bet is probably to jump to 10.3.9 via its combo update. You're less likely to have minor glitches crop up than if you update to each individual point, i.e., 10.3.5 to .6 to .7, etc.

What applications are you still using in OS 9? Perhaps I can offer some OS X alternatives.

i use pro tools in 9,thats it..
but its a very ram intensive program.

i only have 384ram..
so im hesitent to jump into pt 6..osx etc..thats been the problem.when i tried it it was a nightmare.

what does combo update mean??..thanks

a combo update combines all the files necessary to update OS X to a particular version. that is, the 10.3.9 combo updater can get you up from any previous version of 10.3. often, users run into small bugs that crop up after moving from one point to the next in sequence, such as 10.3.5 to 10.3.6. the easy way out is to apply the 10.3.6 combo update over top of that and the bugs tend to vanish. in your case, the nightmare may have spawned from the same behavior.

now, if your computer is capable of running 10.3, then it is equally capable of running 10.3.9. those smaller point updates are not nearly the same as a major upgrade, such as to 10.4. i can understand that with only 384MB of memory, you probably don't want to make the Tiger jump, though with 512MB or more, your eMac would probably be quite happy to accept it.

if I was running 10.3.5, I too would be hesitant to update to 10.3.6, especially if three more updates had come after it to fix the bugs that might have existed when .6 came out. again, your best bet is to apply combo updates of any later version than regular, incremental ones.

do you think 384 ram will be good in 10.3.9?
im not gonna do the one at a time thing.i know what your saying.this was the 1st upgrade in over 1 year.lol
keep in mind i have to think about my recording situation.which is ram intensive..i dont know what to do..thanks

384MB of memory will at the very least behave no differently under 10.3.9 as it has with 10.3.5 or did on 10.3.0. It's the *same* operating system. If anything, due to subsequent bug fixes, your system may be marginally faster, but really we're still talking about Panther one way or the other.

And since your recording system is in OS 9, there is still no connection there to OS X. However, more RAM is always better. I suppose you have the eMac 800, given its age. You can find better quality 512MB upgrades about $90 each, though you can search dealram.com for cheaper chips.

then you can definitely go with PC133 RAM. don't know why OS 9 failed that time. I don't expect the same would happen again, especially if this time you go combo. my suggestion, really, is that you run Software Update and install everything, except for updates to hardware items, like iPod or iSight, if you don't have them.

As I've been saying, the files and applications you use in OS 9 are not connected to your OS 9 System Folder nor to your installation of OS X. When you update OS X, the only things that get updated are located in OS X's System and Applications folders. The Classic environment might get updated, but your OS 9 System Folder is untouched.

So, you can still go to the Startup Disk preference pane and select your OS 9 System Folder for startup. The only thing that would ever prevent this would be a change in your hardware, i.e., a newer computer whose firmware is not capable of booting into OS 9.

Keep in mind what I've been saying about the non-association of files with operating systems. Those two JPEGs are not opening OS 9. However, they are currently associated with an application that only runs in 9/Classic. Therefore, the application, when spawned by each file, is causing Classic to open.

So, you need to Get Info (File menu or Command+I) on each file and choose to Open With… Preview. Or, you can just do this with one of the files and then click Change All…, which will confirm that you want to open all JPEG files in Preview by default.
