Model: PPC 7200/75
RAM: 65+
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.5
Description:
I just did a clean install last night using CONFLICT CATCHER 8 to merge system folders.
It worked fine a couple of times but when I added an extension (desktop Printer) and restarted it loads all extensions etc. but when it gets to the final phase of startup the desktop comes on blank (no icons ) only the clock.
Here's what I did:
-Backed up hd to other internal hd (just for a little insurance).
-Installed CC (8) on old system (7.6.1)
-Clean install with CC (8) on old system (7.6.1)
-CC said I didn't have enough space left on my hd to copy the new files.
-I moved the "previous system folder" to my larger internal hd.
-Merged with "previous system folder".
Now I am able to send this to you because I used "previous system folder" as my start up disk, but it's 7.6.1.
When 8.5 was running it was very slow (esp. to start). It ran faster and pretty smooth after I turned off Virtual Memory.
Disk First Aid didn't find any problems on either volume.
I appreciate your help. You helped me once before.
Thanks,
Ed Arthur

Hi Edward,
It appears that something you moved over using CC8 is conflicting with MacOS 8.5. I had something very similar happen after I moved over a few items. My conflict was with Casady & Greene's program Gramarian.
In any case, I suggest you use CC8 to figure out the problem. Do a Conflict test!
To be able to initiate the test even thought you cannot get the machine to boot up, do the following: Start your machine using the MacOS 8.5 system folder, hold down the space key udring the start up and once CC8 comes up click on conflict test. It will do its business and you tell it if the problem exists or not.
Special note: Casady & Greene announced a new revision to CC8 which was able to work with MacOS 8.5. The first revision wasn't completely compatible. If you don't have the latest version, visit their web site and get the upgrade before you perform the conflict test.
Hopefully this will determine the conflicting item.
Let me know if you need any more help on this.
