Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped

Problem: Software
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerBook 1400c/166
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
After installing Apple's Speech Recognition v1.5, Speakable Items is off by default. When I try to turn it on, I get a dialogue box stating that "Speakable Items could not run because an unexpected error ocurred. Restarting the computer or reinstalling the software may correct the problem." Of course neither of these suggestions solve the problem. I have ruled out an extension conflict. I even installed System 7.6.1 to see if it was conflicting with System 8.1. I have also checked my sound input. Everything appears to be configured correctly, but nothing seems to work. Is there an incompatibility between the PBook 1400 and Speech Recognition? On my previous PowerBook 5300ce it worked fine.

Hi Ron,
Welcome to NoWonder. I'm Myra. I'll be helping you.

There are no conficts between PowerBook 1400 and Speech Recongnition that I can find.
So here are a few things you can try.

Look for a software conflict.
Look for a control panels conflict.
Run Disk First Aid to ensure there are no disk problems present.
Check for viruses and worms.

Let me know if this helps.
