Problem: Software
Computer Type: apple
Model: powerbook 165c

RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: Not related

Description:
both wod and pagemaker report that spelling and or hypenation diction aries are not installed. i assume they are not, but wanted to know where to look to determine this fact empirically.

am also hoping to be able to effect a complete system backup across the network. i am running linux and NT servers at the other end of a ppp dial up, and am familiar with the non-mac side of things, but lost in the mac environment. within the above i need to:

a) locate and backup ALL files in a way that would allow me to recover the system if it crashes.

b) compress same, either in stages (as disk space is limited) or

c) find some way to stream the backup (compressed or uncompressed)

can you help with any of the above?

James,

Spelling dictionaries are kept in different places by different apps, and even different versions of different apps. My PageMaker 6.0 has its dictionaries in a folder called Linguists. Word 5.1a has its in Word Commands. Word 6.0 has its spellings in a folder called Microsoft, shared with the rest of the Office bunch.

For backup on the Mac, there's one answer: Dantz' Retrospect. It does everything you're asking for, plus a load of other things you'd never dreamt of.

For a simple System backup, just drag the complete startup disk to a Jaz.
