Hi
By taking the table cloth out from under the computer and then putting a diffrent one back is never a good idea. I work with a rule of thumb that if it's not nessary then don't do it.
If it is affecting mainly Quark then I would sugest trying to re-install Quark. Other wise it would be a re-install job sorry.
I can't think of why you would turn Journaling off as it is the default filesystem type.

Hi Mike,
Thank you for responding. I understand what you are saying about not being necessary but I have been lead to trust Cocktail.
This is a quote from Cocktail Help regarding file system journaling:
"The problem with the journaled file system is that there are more operations on the disk for each update and most logging operations require synchronous writes. Also, the disk fragmentation for the system becomes a problem much more quickly than if journaling weren’t enabled.
Journaling is best suited for computers requiring high availability, computers containing volumes with many files, and computers containing data that is backed up at infrequent intervals. If your computer contains high-bandwidth usage data files, such as large video, graphics, or audio files, you may want to weigh the benefits of using journaling against the performance needed to access your data."
I am a graphics professional who uses Photoshop frequently and would benefit greatly from this extra (or freed up) speed.
Surely the programmers at Cocktail wouldn't add a feature that would hinder or put our systems at risk.
Anyways it turns out that the Quark document had a history of causing people trouble before it was sent to me, Nice!
Question is do I try out journalling again?

Well unless you were doing some really high definition stuff with either Photoshop or Quark then I think it is worth haveing Journalling again as it makes for a more stabe system. However if you computer is running ok then I would stick with what you have.
I think if your still playing vollyball on a regular occasion then you could try sticking journalling back on, if that doesn't work then it's time to practice your backup and re-install techniques.

Hehe, You like your analogies don't you.
I back up very regularly to DAT tapes so I'll hedge my bets with this extra speed.
Thanks for your advice.
