There are 3 programs that won't launch: System Preferences, Sticky and Preview.

The icons are either dimmed or gone completely, hard to tell for sure.

Hello-my name is Leonard Slutsky and I'd love to help you with this issue.

By any chance, are you able to launch "disk utility" (macintosh hd>applications>utilities>disk utility) and verify/repair disk? If you can, verify the disk then repair it.

Let me know if this fixes the problem.

Hi Leonard,
I tried Disk Utilities repair disk and I threw everything Onyx had at it but no change. I then made a further discovery that when I clicked once on the program listing in the Applications folder it disappeared. ( I was trying to look at the Get Info box.) Also I you can add iCal to the affected list.
Thanks for your help.

First of all, it is important to have a complete backup of your mac in case of an emergency. Instructions are availible at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106941.

Ok-before I make my final suggestion, the last resort, check out http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25392. This will explain isolation techniques.

If these don't solve the problem, you may need to do an archive and install.

This will reinstall all of the system files, the system preferences, preview, and sticky, while still keeping intact the files in you home directory intact.

Make sure you have a complete backup though, in case something goes wrong in the process.

To do an archive and install, insert the macosx cd and press the c button while booting your mac. This will boot to the cd. Instructions for the entire archive and install should be printed from http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120 in advance, for reference.

Let me know how this goes or if you need any more help.

Hi Leonard,
I backed up all the data and did a total clean install. Seems to be working OK but sure was hoping to avoid that. Took several hours to reinstall everything but decided that was the best route to go.

Thanks for your help.
