Well, OK, maybe not ten thousand, but a lot!!
In Quark 6.5, when I go to the Printer Description drop down menu in the Setup Tab on the print box, there are hundreds of PPD's showing, so I do a search for them, delete them, and they reinstall themselves!!
This is happening on several macs in the same situation at my workplace, what are we doing wrong??
Thanking you in advance for your time,
Gary Callard
Hi Gary,
It's always advisable, when installing OS X, to do a custom install to strip out all of the PPDs, fonts and languages you don't need.
That doesn't help you in your current situation, though ;-) (At this stage it is important to note that I am still running OS X 10.3.9, so some of the descriptions may vary slightly from what you will actually see.)
If you are nervous about tinkering with your system, you can skip Steps 1–3 and go straight on to Step 4, otherwise do the following:
1. Go to the System Library folder (that's the Library folder on your boot disk – NOT the Library folder inside the System Folder). Open the Printers/PPDs/Contents/Resources folder and then you will see another folder called 'en.lproj'. Open that folder.
In it, you will see the "ten thousand PPDs".

At this stage, you need to know which printers YOU have and need to keep. If you use Adobe Acrobat, make sure you keep the Distiller PPDs/PDF PPDs, etc. Bin the rest of them.
2. Having done that, close that string of folders you have opened and start a new one by opening the Library folder in your User folder. Again, you are looking for the Printers folder. Make sure that the PPDs in this folder match the ones you have in the main Library folder that you tinkered with in Step 1, trashing any that are unnecessary.
3. Now you need to look for your QuarkXPress Prefs folder. As the name suggests, I am a fairly advanced user of QXP, so I use a heavily customised setup. Which is great, apart from the fact that I can't remember where the QXP Prefs folder is on a standard installation!

Still [Cmd]+[F] should do the trick!
When you've found that folder, open it. You will see a folder called 'PPD'. Open it and TRASH EVERYTHING! QXP makes copies of the PPDs it needs in that folder. It didn't have any in there when you installed it, so don't worry about it.
4. Now restart your Mac and run QXP. In the 'Utilities' menu of QXP, you will see an item called 'PPD Manager'. There you will see a long list of the PPDs available to QXP, each one accompanied by an 'Include' radio button. Go through your (hopefully much abbreviated) list of printers, deselcting the ones you DO NOT want QXP to include in the 'Print' dialog.
Click on 'OK'.
Voilà! You should now see a mercifully short list of printers in your 'Print' dialogs.
Hope that helps!

It worked!!
Thank you kind Sir, you are indeed, the Captain of all things Quark.
Cheers
