I just got my Macintosh HD icon disapearing from the desktop, and the only way for me to see the full icon is via a search, but I cannot put it back onto the desktop, so i ran a "verify disk" in Disk Utility and it produced this message, what should I do? Should I back up?:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Checking multi-linked files.
Checking Catalog hierarchy.
%)
Checking Extended Attributes file.
Checking volume bitmap.
Checking volume information.
Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked

Hello Daniel

thanks for using macosx.com and I will try to advise and assist you

First and foremost your disk is failing or at the least something has gone nasty on it.

If you don't have a back up already make one now... I can't promise it will be 100% good but any back up is better than none - at the very least attempt to get copies of your iTunes music files, iphoto pictures etc. Free applications such as SilverKeeper, Carbon Copy Cloner, iBackUp or the demo mode of SuperDuper! can help you

Once you have done that (or if you already have a backup) start the Mac using the installer disk... (hold down C key on start up) once you have selected your language go into the Menus and open the Disk Utility and run "Repair Disk"

If that can't fix it you have bigger problems

Hope that helps a bit - sorry I can't really be more positive right now.

If you need more help come back to me and we will discuss the options.

Okay, I also must say that my iMac is second hand and the disks i have with it are not official, they were made by the shop who sold them to me ("CANCOM") and so it's not possible to run utility disk from the cd and repair, so i backed up my files and re-installed the computer, but this didn't work...

and now when i go "Search" and enter "Macintosh HD" it find's nothing, but i can add the Macintosh HD in the "others" option of the search, so it's there but.... well not there at the same time

that was rather naughty of Cancom then... even so properly copied disks should still be able to boot the Mac and run the Disk Utility...

If you cannot repair the disk I suspect it will probably give up the ghost... try putting the CD/DVD in the Mac and using "Startup Disk" to select it and then restart.

If you have another Mac and a FireWire cable you may be able to start the iMac in target disk mode (hold T on startup till you see the big FW symbol) connect another Mac and run Disk Utility from there. Or beg borrow otherwise lay hands on a set of installers that will boot the Mac...

Or at a push purchase a tool such as DiskWarrior - it isn't cheap but it is very very good.

Hope that helps

I have diskWarrior, ran it last night, problem solved, for your futur reference with other people the report is here:

===

DiskWarrior has successfully built a new optimized directory for the disk named "Macintosh HD." The new directory is
ready to replace the original directory.

All file and folder data was easily located.

Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicates that there will be changes to the number, the
contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders. It is recommended that you preview the replacement
directory and examine the items listed below. All files and folders were compared and a total of 14,144,368
comparison tests were performed.

• Errors, if any, in the directory structure such as tree depth, header node, map nodes, node size, node counts, node
links, indexes and more have been repaired.

• 13 files had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired.

• The disk was made visible.

• 2 folders had a directory entry with an incorrect custom icon flag that was repaired.
