Description:
I have scanned some photos (TIFF) and sent them (E-mail) to users of DOS machines and they don't know how to open them. I would like to suggest they throw away the DOS machines and buy Macs. What else can I tell them?

Jim,
Hi, my name is Ed; I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your question. My email address is .
According to The Macintosh Bible, "Tag Image File Format (TIFF), the de facto standard among graphics professionals and seirous desktop publishers for scanned images and bit maps, is platform-independent, but subtle differences exist between the Mac and PC versions. Photoshop, MacLinkPlus, and the freeware program FlipTIFF can help you when you are translating between Mac and PC formats."
GraphicConverter, a shareware utility available from ZDNet Mac Download at is also very good at these kinds of conversions.
It is also quite possible that the problem is NOT the compatibility of the graphics format, but the compatibility of the compression routines used in the Mac and PC email applications. There are a number of freeware utilities available (from ZDNet Mac Download) that will do cross-platform decompression. Check them out.
