I know this has been a problem from others. I've actually been running tiger and the printer WAS working with it.. somehow. Started having issues with the machine crashing and reintalled the os clean. after several updates I realized that i hadn't put tiger back in,, now of course the printer isn't working. Seems like I fixed it once before... not sure how. Could be that because I had an archived system on there it was still working. so I tried putting an older system back on . lots of problems after the archive/install. Had to give up and put tiger back so everything else would play nice. very annoyed. takes so long to reupdate everything but still really tempted to wipe the system.. put the old os back on and reload all the programs to make this work. then maybe put tiger on as an archive and install? sure what to do. had the fuser replaced last week but seems like it had quit communicating before that. I read something about a cold reset taking out the jet direct card??? what is that and where is it?

becky,
Please bear with me as I try to understand your problem and help you. I won't be able to provide any magic "one-response" fix. I need you to help me understand the problem - since I'm not there to look at the computer!
First things first - do you have 10.4 up and running? I don't know what "old os" you had, so you need to install and update the newest OS version you have, and then come back and tell me what version you have running.

sorry bout that... I am currently running OS 10.4.11 tiger.

OK, great.
Now for the printer setup. You talked about the jetdirect card. That would be a plug-in on the back of the printer for an ethernet port. Can you please tell me how you have the printer connected (ethernet to router, or USB)? In the past, have you used appletalk as the protocol (in Printer Setup Utility) when adding the printer?
Either by a front panel menu selection, or a button on the rear of the printer, print out a test page and see if it gives you any errors, etc.

i've been doing a lot of searching for an answer. I didn't know what a jet direct card was before... the jetdirect card is not the problem.. It's a USB printer connected to a hub and to a socket. i hook it up in the printer utility as a usb printer. The ppd is not listed... no matter how many times i've tried to reinstall or update.. all that shows up is a generic printer. print using hp 1.4.5 is what it says. it will print test pages. it's just not speaking with the computer.

Print Using - HP 1.4.5 is the correct driver version that was included in OS X. That isn't the same as a generic driver. If it were generic, it would say "generic postscript."
Can you please try downloading the driver version 1.7.1 from HP and installing it, and then also download the special "updater" for Tiger and install that?
Then, besides trying to print as currently setup, please also unplug from the hub and directly plug into the computer (to see if the USB hub is the problem)?

kk. well it didn't say laserjet 3500 so i wondered if it was a default.. anywho i've tried both of those downloads. i've tried plugging into the front of the computer. nothing. I'm seriously wondering if it's true. Tiger doesn't like the 3500. It might be that it worked because i had an archive and install version of tiger with an older system still on the drive. worried i might have to do a clean install and not put tiger on.

OK, so you've installed the two downloads (not just downloaded them?)? And you've added the printer with Printer Setup/Print & Fax, and when you added it you saw the 1.7.1 driver?
Another thing - there's a printer firmware download on the HP site - you should try that, too.
If still nothing, try "Reset Printing System," a menu choice in Printer Setup Utility, then Add the printer again.
Good luck.
