We just purchased the Tiger software and one of the artists is doing an install. After installation of the new Tiger upgrade was completed successfully, he opened the iTune and it asked if he wanted to upgrade to the new version 5.0 iTunes. He said yes and it installed and asked to restart, which it did, but it would remain in the 'reboot' mode and never finished rebooting. The screen has the blue background and the Spotlight icon in the top right corner. No dock, nothing. When the cursor is moved over the Spotlight, it just spins the rainbow wheel. Please help!

Jess,

Apple reccomends doing something called Repair Permissions after installing new software. The application to run this can be found on your install CD. Put the disk in and then restart holding down the "c" key. This will start it up using the CD/DVD. Once it's up you'll see an installer screen - ignor it and go to the top left in the menu bar to "File". In there go to Disk Utility. When the Disk Util window opens you'll see a button at the bottom that says Repair Permissons. You'll have to select your Hard Drive in the list above it to activate the button. Click the Repair Perm button and let it go. When it's done, and it could take a while, go back to the top left menu bar under file and click quit. do the same for the installer and your system should restart.

As a side note - If this is the first time your systems are running Tiger, Spotlight will be somewhat inactive until it indexes the entire system. This could take one to several hours depending on how much info it needs to index. However this process shouldn't keep your system from booting.

Thanks

Thanks! It took a while for the machine to initially reboot. BUT... after trying everything mentioned in your e-mail, we are still stuck with a half-hour reboot. That can't be right.
We have also discovered that only the system fonts are available in applications such as PhotoShop and InDesign. The other fonts are out there in a font folder but cannot be put into use. The system has been trying to reboot for more than 30 minutes.

Jess,

There seems to be a glitch with Tiger which i'm sure is being worked on.

Here is a possible solution.

Go in to your hard drive, open the Library folder then inside there open the StartupItems folder and delete everything inside it. Restart.

If that doesn't help there are some diagnostics you can run with the help of a small utility. Let's start with getting the utility. It's called AppleJack and you can get it from this link - don't worry it's free.

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596

After you download and install the utility you'll need to restart to run it. While restarting hold down the "Apple-S" keys. This will boot your system into single user mode. Don't panic when you see a screen of scrolling text. When the text stops scrolling - type in applejack and then hit return. you'll be given a list of choices on what part of the utility you wish to run. I suggest picking the "a" for autopilot. this will perform all of the tasks that applejack can do. Just follow the directions and you should be fine.

If you don't want to download anything please let me know.

Thanks

As for the font issue, what type of font management software are you using?

Thanks

We use Font Book.
We've tried your suggestions, all but the AppleJack download, which at this time isn't an option. The machine still takes 25-30 minutes to boot after all that. We remain perplexed by the font issue, as the machine went into its spinning rainbow wheel mode when we tried to install a font called Impact. We are fairly certain we would get the same results with any other font in the fonts folder that contain most of the fonts used for projects.

Jess,

First thing I would try is restarting in Single-User Mode and running the fsck command (file system check). This is the option to downloading AppleJack. You can boot into the Mac’s raw Unix underlayer to perform some diagnostic and healing commands. If you press Command-S when you restart the system, Mac OS X brings up a whole UNIX-based code window. When it stops at the localhost # prompt, type sbin/fsck -y if your system is not Journaled or type sbin/fsck -f if your system is Journaled. A system check program takes over and will tell you if your drive needs repair. Most of the time if it finds a problem it will fix it. It’s the UNIX version of a desktop rebuild, a quick Disk Doctor. Once the diagnostic is done running it will tell you if your system appears ok or if it has fixed found problems. After the localhost # prompt type exit and then hit the enter key. This will continue the boot up process and hopefully bring you back.

It's also very possible that you could have a corrupt font. Once the system starts up maybe you should try removing the FontBook prefs and placing them on your desktop. Doing this will deactivate any and all settings in FontBook but may also allow you to find your culprit. The FontBook pref can be found in Home/Library/Preferences. "com.apple.FontBook.plist".

I'll check on iTunes issues and Tiger in the meantime.

Thanks! I'll pass this info on and see if we can get to the bottom of the problem.
