In 10.4.2 software update yeilds the bad server response -1011. My ISP is a residential account with DirecWay. Is there a fix on your site ?? I am a new member and just learning to navigate.

Hi Tim
1011 error occurs when running SU whenever a cache file is contained in user/yourname/Library/Caches/com.apple.softwareupdate/00/14
A workaround is to empty any cache file inside folder 14 and lock the folder - (select 14, get info, check locked). This way, no cache file can be written there and SU can be run continually without ever returning an -1011 error or you needing to delete any folders.
This is usually only a problem when using DirectWay.

Wow!!! Such a fast response to a troubling problem. Thanks so much.
You mentioned "deleting any folders" what do you mean by that? Because just trashing contents of #14, and not locking, the next time SU ran it yielded the same error.
For future reference--all those other cache's--how do I determine what app. they are related to, and if it is okay to trash them without causing OS probs. Or is this something that comes with experience.
About the macosx.com site--how/where do I look, for these kind of answeres to posted questions. Or do the answeres not get posted ?

Well...
I think we are on the right track here--
With #14 locked/un, with contents or w/o, SU will install one run, but when it runs again the "bad server -1011" response shows up.
Maybe #00 needs to be locked, but I am not confortable enough with what I am doing to go ahead and make that change without some "advice."
thanks again

It's okay to trash any Cache file on the machine.
You can use programs like Cocktail, Onyx, etc to trash cache files, logs etc. These are not necessary files and can become very large. You can find these and other programs at
http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx
On our Main Forums, you can use the Search to find things. Use Search on the main forum page, or from within any forum.
We don't have a search function setup for this free support side of things yet.
Lock the entire folder 'com.apple.SoftwareUpdate' and try.

What I ended up doing that seems to be working:
Emptying #14; in the get info: locked the file, also changed the permissions and details to "no access."
Not sure if this is okay to do. When I run "repair permissions" will this be detected as a problem and repaired?
How do I go about identifying what the other ports are, and the caches in them? I would like to begin to understand this rather than just using Cocktail to empty them.

Repairing Permissions won't be a problem. It would tell you what it's doing.
This doesn't have anything to do with Ports, just Cache files., which are just files stored from sites to make it quicker for the machine to get back to that site.
In your case, I think the problem is with the latency of Satelite that causes the problem

Hi Bob
Thanks!! SU seems to be running fine now. Many folks I know are having the same problem, so you have helped many.
I have no idea if this is related but here is something else that has been ongoing:
I am having intermitent problems with different browsers not loading pages, not loading fully, displaying blank pages, errors opening, taking along time, etc. (Safari, Camino, I.E., Firefox).
My ISP is DirecWay; I have the firewall up using system pref and the sharing control panel (on or off dosen't matter), re-starting usually clears the problem until it shows up again.
Here is a log entry that repeats itself oten: localhost mDNSResponder: Couldn't read user-specified local hostname; using default “Macintosh-000A95E03A8E.local” instead
Any ideas? Tiger 10.4.2
