I have a small hard drive 20GB (iBook laptop, Memory 256 MB, PowerPC G3) I bought Mac OS X 10.4. - 2 DVDs for G4 with universal installer.
After I install both DVDs Tiger I am left with just 7GB of free space. Tiger comes with iLife '05 and iWork.
Does it have to take so much space? How can I free some space?
Thanks,
Sigita

It certainly doesn't have to take up so much space. You could have chosen to customize each installation. For Tiger, you can choose not to install language localizations, some extra fonts, printer drivers for printer makes you will never use, etc. For iLife, a lot of the installation is themes and templates for iMovie and iDVD. You can decide which components of iLife you are likely to use and just install them.
Now, after the fact, you can still trash some items. Let me know what you think you want to keep and I'll help you find the rest.
As far as localizations are concerned, I suggest downloading Delocalizer and removing any non-U.S. English files you don't need.

Thank you Ben for answering to me. I am taking my first steps with mac
Could you help me with the installation as well, please ?
When and how can I get to options when installing?
Can I choose not to install iDVD?
Delocalizer looks like a great program, but I type texts in several languages, so it probably didn't work for me

First about DeLocalizer: It won't prevent you from typing in other languages. Localization files are designed to allow you to *use* your computer in other languages; to interact with the user interface, menus, etc. in those languages that are available in each application.
In the Installer, I'm pretty sure the order is as follows:
- Read Me
- License Agreement
- Select Destination (which includes a button for Installation Options: Erase & Install; Archive & Install; Upgrade)
- this fourth step includes a button for Customize—instead of Easy Install—where you can uncheck the items you don't want.
The same order appears for the iLife installation, allowing you to uncheck the components you don't wish to keep.

What a great tip! DeLocalizer helped me to regain 2 GB!
Tiger version that I have is 2 DVDs for a iBook G4. The person I bought those DVDs included a third "universal" DVD, which I use to install Tiger. Tiger is bundled with iLife '05 and World Book and I eventhought I select "custom" installation it still "eats" half of my HDD. I deleted iDVD and iMovie manualy (threw them from applications into trash)
If you happen to know any other way or software which could show what is taking what and what could be deleted, please let me know.
Thank you,
Sigita
