When I try to do a backup, I get the message the backup failed. Just prior to the failure, the desktop of my MacBook Pro shows a dmg file created on the laptop's desktop! The status message shows that the Time Machine was trying to create a backup of my laptop hard drive on the same hard drive - not the Time Capsule. Yet, the Time Capsule is the selected destination of any backup image.

I've visited the Genius Folks at the local Apple Store. They haven't a clue.

Anyone care to suggest the cause and solution?

Issue resolved. I found that by turning off the Airport I was able to create the initial backup without incurring a failure. By the way, the prior failing backs failed, because the TimeMachine tried to place the backup image on the hard drive of my laptop!!!!

Once the primary backup was complete, I could turn on the Airport and everything now works just fine.

Go figure.
