I am a new computer user , at the bottom of the learning curve. I have never been a tecnical person. Your patience will be appreciated.
I own a second hand mac power book G4 with a 12 inch screen. I have had to replace the hard drive and added a more memory .

My computers information ;
processor 1.33 GHz PowerPCG4
memory 1.25 GB DDR SDRAM
memory DIMMO/BUILT-IN 256MB
DIMMI/J31 1GB DDR SDRAM PC700U-25330

software system version Mac OS X 10.3.9 (7W98)
Kernal version 7.9.0

logs console log 1.8 KB
System log 424.21 KB

I tried to install Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 . Unsuccsesfuly.
I understand the problem to be , it needs a mac version 10.4.8 or a 10.5.2 and I only have a version 10.3.9

I would like to upgrade this computer if posible so that it will operate the soft ware.
I have google searched for upgrades and found the list confusing and unclear. Your recomendadtion as to a web sight for a download would be much appreciated .

Thank you for you time and effort ,
regards Gordon Mcquaid

If you want to upgrade beyond 10.3.9, then you would go to 10.4, or 10.5. Neither can be downloaded, you must purchase that upgraded system. It will completely upgrade what you have now. I would recommend that you bypass 10.4, and get 10.5
You can order that directly from Apple.com, or there are a variety of internet sites, such as Amazon.com, where you might find it at a discount.

Thanks for using macosx.com!

Photo Booth is included with Leopard, but you don't have to use it just because it's there... But, yes, to use PhotoBooth (as well as iChat video), you would need a compatible web cam of some kind.

Dale , I have just been on the mac store site , reading the reveiw section. It seems the users either love the update or hate it. Things crashing ,speed issues, various tecnical and reformence things. In your experience do the problems tend to originate in the receiving older computer, faulty upgrade source , the computers' operator pushing a wrong button ? The poor reviews have me nervous. Am I being to paranoid ? Are there concerns revolving around compatability of my computer and the upgrade ; mac OSX 10.5.3 [ as listed ].

You will be going up 2 full generations to Leopard. So, yes, you should be concerned about software compatibility. Check at the sites for the software that you use, looking for updates for Leopard. If you use an all-in-one printer, any of those will have updates for Leopard. Do your research before upgrading, so you know what you have. You have a Mac that should be ready to upgrade, and you need the upgrade for the new software that you purchased (the Photoshop elements 6, remember?)

Here's one major help that can help you avoid some problems when you upgrade. Choose the Option to Archive and Install to 10.5, and DON'T use the default upgrade. That will give you the smoothest path to a good result!

thank you Dale ,for your reply. I am going to try and get over to Victoria some time this week or early next . Will be going to a Mac store to purchase the OSX 10.5 upgrade, and will ask one of their staff to help with the upgrade. This may be extra $$ ,but will save me a lot of mental anguish. Am looking forward enjoying my computer experience.
