I'm trying to get my old files into my new computer. How would you transfer old Word 4 files and old Claris Works files from a Power Computing 100, which is like a Power PC 6100 clone, to a Macintosh G4? The Power 100 has a floppy drive, but the G4 does not yet have a floppy drive. If I got a floppy for my G4, would the two floppies be compatible, and if so, would my new Word and Appleworks programs be able to read and convert my old Word 4 and Claris Works programs? The Power Computing 100 also has an old SyQuest drive as a back-up device. Alternately, I have a .Mac account. Could I use iDisk to somehow transfer the files? My Power Computing 100 has an ethernet connection, but it doesn't have a modem. My G4 has a DSL connection to the internet. Can I get the old computer to get a wireless connection to the internet off the new machine? Alternately, can I get some kind of media storage device I could get adaptors for that could hook up the two computers? Thank you so much for tackling this problem.
Do it the easy way. Get an external USB floppy drive and assuming that your files aren't that big (or you could compress them), just transfer via floppies. It'll be slow, but you'll also have a backup of these files (on the floppies, at least).Word 4 and Claris Works files should be able to be read by your version of Word (?part of Microsoft Office 2004) and AppleWorks. If it doesn't work,an alternative would be to purchase MacLink Plus Deluxe, but that's about $100.
Hope that helps and please let us know what happens. Thanks.
