KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Beginner

PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: Quicken
MODEL: version 2.0
RAM: Not related
OS VERSION: Not related
SERVICE PACK:

DESCRIPTION:

Own Quicken 2. since 1992. No problems. Just bought laptop and quicken offers system to transfer from one to another by backing up data from 1, installing program from original disk and then restoring data to other computer. Tried to re-install onto laptop and got following message: "cannot find the file 'a:install' or one of lits components. Make sure the path & filename are correct and that all required libraries are available."

I'm officially lost and after spending 45 useless minutes at the Quicken web site, I'm convinced they don't care and I don't want to do business with them!

If you have any ideas on how to install, please let me know; if not, can you suggest another program?

THANKS.

MS-Money is a good program.

How old are the disks you are installing from?

Are you sure that it is INSTALL.EXE (and not SETUP.EXE). Try opening the disk from "My Computer" ... double click the A: icon and run the INSTALL/SETUP program from there... Make sure you are using the disks in the right order (Disk2 may not have the install program!).

Sometimes, these 3.5" things get a little cranky... And, if stored for a long time, seem to become stiff. If this is the case, you can try this:

(Try this one at your own risk...) You will notice the circular metal portion on the back side of the disk. It has 2 holes in it, one in the center, and the other a little bit off. Stick your pinky finger (or whichever you choose) into the hole that is a bit off. Now try giving the circular disk a turn. Sometimes, if kept in moisture for a long while, the insides of the disk stick and don't behave properly. The motion will loosen up the inside parts of the disk.

Did those disks get erased somehow? If so, then you're out of luck... You'd be better off using a newer program such as the new Quicken or MSMoney . If you get the new Quicken, you still might be able to restore your data and import it into the newer version. I am not sure if MSMoney can handle Quicken files.
